Urzila Carlson’s Shocking Confession About Her Comedy Show

Urzila Carlson, known for her appearances on Have You Been Paying Attention? and as a panellist on The Masked Singer, has now launched her own sketch comedy series titled Urzila. The South African-born New Zealand comedian’s debut series features a range of characters, many of which are inspired by jokes from her stand-up performances.

However, Urzila has a surprising confession that may resonate with many. She admits to being, at times, a bit of a Karen — the term used to describe an aggressive, middle-aged woman who demands attention and services. According to Urzila, this trait is not unique to her, but something that many people might have experienced in their lives.

“I think there’s a Karen that lives in all of us,” says the 50-year-old comedian. “If you think there’s no Karen inside you, then you’ve not experienced bad customer service where you go, ‘I do want to talk to the manager.’”

What is Urzila about?

One of the sketches features Urzila playing a character who is diagnosed with early-onset Karen. The doctor in the sketch is portrayed by Sam Pang, a versatile actor known for his work in various TV shows and films.

“When Sam came on to the show he said to me, ‘What is this? You’re just having a little reunion with all your friends,’” Urzila recalls.

“I go, ‘Of course I am. If your name is on the door and you get to choose, you’re just going to invite your friends that are really funny. I’d be a fool not to.’”

Who else is in Urzila?

Sam is not the only familiar face in the series. Viewers can also expect to see Julia Morris, co-host of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, Nazeem Hussain, and Tom Gleisner, the ringmaster of Have You Been Paying Attention?.

The show’s wild sketches often draw from Urzila’s personal experiences. One such sketch is based on a “Hire-a Lez” handywoman service, which is loosely inspired by her own skills.

“I am very handy!” she says. “I want to do a YouTube show, not even for comedy. Someone says, ‘Part of my fence fell down and we’re waiting for a builder.’ I’m like, ‘Let’s go outside. I want to fix it for you right now.’”

How can I watch Urzila?

The series launches on Wednesday, April 29, at 9:25pm on ABC and ABC iview. It promises to deliver a mix of humor, self-awareness, and clever storytelling that reflects Urzila’s unique perspective on life and comedy.
