Origin hero shocks with NSW return bid

James Tedesco Shines in Roosters’ Comeback Victory

James Tedesco has once again proven why he is one of the most reliable players in the NRL, delivering a standout performance that could reignite his hopes of playing for New South Wales in the State of Origin series. Despite not wanting to discuss his prospects earlier in the week, Tedesco sent a clear message to NSW coach Laurie Daley with a masterclass display on Sunday as the Roosters secured a 38-24 victory over the Knights at Allianz Stadium.

The Roosters started slowly but eventually turned the game around thanks to Tedesco’s exceptional efforts. The veteran fullback finished the match with an impressive stat line: 24 runs for 223 metres, 17 tackle busts, a try, three assists, and three line-breaks. His performance was one of the most complete of the season, showcasing his attacking flair and defensive resilience.

Tedesco’s performance came just a month before the NSW team for the Origin opener is announced. While he last wore the No.1 jersey in 2024 when Dylan Edwards was injured, the competition for the position remains fierce. Edwards is still the favorite to start, but Tedesco’s display underlined his readiness to represent the state whenever called upon.

He played a pivotal role in several key moments during the game. Tedesco threw the final pass for the Roosters’ first try, set up a second try for Hugo Savala with a grubber kick, scored a try himself, and even contributed to another try through a clever scrum move. His leadership and composure in the second half were instrumental in securing the win.

Despite his consistent performances, Tedesco has never let down his state. The question now is whether Daley will choose to go back to the future and trust the veteran fullback once again.

Fletcher Hunt Shines in First Half

Fletcher Hunt made a strong case for being a key player in the Roosters’ lineup with a standout first-half performance. Known for his potential, Hunt looked like a genuine superstar on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick and making crucial try-saving tackles.

Hunt opened the scoring in the ninth minute, showing his ability to make an immediate impact. He then put the Roosters ahead midway through the first half by making a spectacular diving catch on a Dylan Brown kick, marking his return from a knee injury.

Later, Hunt backed up a big break by late inclusion Francis Manuleleua to complete his hat-trick. Filling in at left centre, he made two vital tackles to deny Mark Nawaqanitawase and Siua Wong, keeping the Roosters ahead 24-12 at halftime.

Although the Knights had the chance to pull off an upset, they struggled to gain momentum in the second half. Coaches Justin Holbrook, Sandon Smith, and Dom Young failed to capitalize on their opportunities against their former team.

Hugo Savala Proves His Worth

Hugo Savala’s future with the Roosters was uncertain after the signing of Daly Cherry-Evans, but he has quickly found his place in the team. The towering playmaker scored a try in each half, with his first coming off a kick from Sam Walker that was initially blocked by Daniel Tupou before Savala capitalized on the loose ball.

Walker had a mixed day, but his third-minute grubber in the second half proved decisive. The Knights’ defense panicked, allowing Walker to pick up the loose ball instead of conceding a penalty. This moment shifted the momentum in the Roosters’ favor.

Savala also showed his versatility by roaming to the right side late in the first half, creating an overlap that should have led to a try. His ability to adapt and contribute in different areas of the field highlights his value to the team.
