Adelaide United Secures Crucial Victory Over Macarthur
Adelaide United’s coach, Airton Andrioli, has expressed immense admiration for Brazilian player Anselmo following his outstanding performance in a vital 3-1 A-League Men’s victory against Macarthur at Coopers Stadium. Anselmo’s two goals from the bench were instrumental in securing the win, which significantly boosted the Reds’ chances of closing the gap on second-placed Auckland.
Earlier on Sunday, Newcastle clinched the premiership after Auckland FC suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Central Coast Mariners. This result provided Adelaide with an opportunity to narrow the gap on Auckland to just one point if they could overcome the Bulls at home.
The match began with a setback for United when Mitch Duke scored to give Macarthur a 1-0 halftime lead. However, Andrioli made strategic substitutions at the interval, introducing Anselmo and Brody Burkitt. The impact was immediate, as Anselmo scored a powerful header in the 63rd minute, followed by Pana Kikianis putting the Reds ahead. Anselmo then sealed his impressive performance with a close-range finish in the 89th minute.
Andrioli praised the 37-year-old, who has faced numerous challenges since joining the Reds. “First of all, I’d like to say I’m extremely happy for him because he went through a tough time,” he said. “He came here with expectations to play and help us, but he had a few difficult moments with injuries, couldn’t train, and couldn’t get himself fit. He was down for quite a long period of time, but credit to him.”
“He always had belief and confidence in what he could do if he was healthy and fit, so for that reason, I’m really happy for him. I have no doubts about the way he’s been coming into the game; he’s a player who can have an impact for us.”

Following the victory, Adelaide United now sit third in the league, two points ahead of Sydney FC and fifth-placed Melbourne City. The Reds will face Melbourne City in the final match of the home and away season on Sunday. The outcome of the earlier match between Sydney and Auckland could determine the Reds’ fate. A win for Auckland would eliminate any chance of Adelaide finishing in second place, and Andrioli knows only a victory will suffice for his team.
“What an opportunity to play this game against Melbourne City next week,” he said. “I’ll say like I’ve been saying all season — the most important match is the next one, and this is the most important game. We will go there prepared to play and win the match. We will prepare in the best possible way, like we have been doing all season, and we’re going to go to Melbourne with a lot of confidence.”

Macarthur, currently in ninth place, will face seventh-placed Wellington Phoenix at home on Friday night. Both teams are unable to make the finals, but coach Mile Sterjovski hopes to end the campaign on a positive note with a victory in front of their supporters.
“We still want to finish on a high in front of our home crowd, so we will focus on next week and we want to get a result,” he said.
