City Leaders Announce New Traffic Signals as Flying Squirrels Keep Playing

New Traffic Signals Coming to CarMax Park Area This Fall

Richmond city leaders have announced that new traffic signals will be installed near CarMax Park this fall, as the Flying Squirrels continue their baseball season. The changes are part of a larger redevelopment plan for the Diamond District, which is expected to be completed by Fall 2026.

The issue of out-of-service traffic signals has been a concern in the area since before the Flying Squirrels’ inaugural opening day game on April 7. The signals have been non-functional for several months, raising concerns about pedestrian safety and traffic flow. In fact, there have been several traffic-related deaths reported since December 2025, prompting local officials to take action.

Development and Planning Efforts

The Richmond Economic Development Authority (EDA) has been involved in discussions regarding the traffic signals. According to Michael Hinkle, an EDA spokesperson, games at the stadium are generally staggered, but departures can sometimes be more condensed. He noted that the traffic signals are part of the broader Diamond District redevelopment project, which is expected to be completed by Fall 2026. However, this timeline depends on the demolition of the Sports Backers stadium.

The Diamond District Developer will be responsible for making the necessary changes and improvements, including the installation of the new traffic signals. The Richmond Department of Public Works will review and approve the plans, and will also be responsible for maintaining the signals after they are installed.

Safety Measures Being Considered

In addition to the new traffic signals, the Richmond Police Department is working on ways to efficiently and safely assist people leaving the area during the baseball season. This includes ensuring that drivers can access North Arthur Ashe Boulevard safely at the location of the out-of-service signal.

The police department is currently assessing different strategies to improve traffic flow and reduce potential hazards. These efforts are aimed at minimizing disruptions and ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors to the area.

Community Concerns and Next Steps

Residents and commuters in the area have expressed concerns about the ongoing issues with the traffic signals. While the development project promises long-term benefits, the immediate impact on daily traffic and safety remains a priority for local officials.

As the project moves forward, it is expected that the new traffic signals will significantly improve conditions around CarMax Park. The collaboration between the Diamond District Developer, the EDA, and the Department of Public Works is key to ensuring that the project meets its goals and addresses the needs of the community.

With the anticipated completion date set for Fall 2026, the focus remains on preparing for the changes and ensuring that the area is ready to accommodate increased traffic and activity during the baseball season. Local leaders are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to make the transition as smooth as possible.
