Nacogdoches Launches Major Sewer Repair Initiative

Nacogdoches, Texas – The city of Nacogdoches is taking action to address long-standing issues with its aging sewer system. After multiple breaks and persistent problems, the city has launched a project aimed at repairing and upgrading the infrastructure that serves the community.

The most recent incident occurred in 2024 when a break at Lanana Creek released over 100,000 gallons of raw sewage into the water. This event highlighted the urgent need for intervention and prompted officials to begin planning for a comprehensive solution.

Case Opperman, the public works director for the City of Nacogdoches, explained that the project will take several years to complete. He emphasized that the work involves more than just fixing broken pipes. It requires an extensive design process, surveying, environmental planning, and construction. The complexity of the task is due in part to the fact that the sewer lines stretch across a large area of the city.

“There’s several factors as to why these projects need to take place,” Opperman said. “But the age of the lines and the undermining of certain areas are major driving factors.”

Earlier this month, the city took the first step by hiring a surveyor to assess the current condition of the sewer lines. Opperman noted that the surveying and environmental work is expected to be completed within one or two years. Following that, the design phase will begin.

“We hope for our surveying and environmental work to be done in a year or two and then design will start subsequent to that effort,” he said. He also mentioned that the city hopes to finish the surveying by the summer.

Opperman acknowledged the concerns raised by residents about the aging infrastructure and assured them that the city is committed to addressing these issues. He emphasized that the goal of the project is to eliminate future problems and prevent similar incidents from occurring.

“The impetus for this project is to eliminate these issues in the future,” he said. “Getting the sewer lines away from the creeks will hopefully keep that from happening again for a really long time.”

While there is currently no set budget for the project, Opperman stated that the funding will come from the city’s capital improvement fund. This ensures that the necessary resources will be available to support the long-term efforts required to modernize the sewer system.

The project represents a significant investment in the city’s infrastructure and reflects a commitment to improving public health and environmental safety. As the work progresses, residents can expect regular updates from city officials on the status of the project and any changes to the timeline.

This initiative not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable sewer system in the years to come.
