A Test of Skill and Spirit
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Matt Fitzpatrick faced a unique set of challenges during the 2026 RBC Heritage. Not only did he have to navigate the demanding Pete Dye design at Harbour Town Golf Links, but he also had to contend with the pressure of competing against world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler for 19 holes on Sunday. Additionally, he dealt with the loud chants of patriotic American fans who repeatedly shouted “U-S-A” at him. However, Fitzpatrick responded with a masterful 4-iron from 204 yards to 13 feet, setting up a crucial birdie that sealed his victory.
“It didn’t get out of line in terms of no one was shouting on backswings or anything like that, which was great,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’m all for it. You want golf to have an atmosphere, in my opinion. I grew up watching football. I’m paid so much money to be out there in front of those crowds, having them chanting at you every week, it’s a great feeling. However, there’s no better feeling than coming out on top against that. There isn’t a better feeling.”
Fitzpatrick has always had a strong connection with the local community, having won this tournament previously in 2023. His family’s annual vacations here and their attendance at the PGA Tour stop have made him a beloved figure among the locals. Despite this, there were a few instances where some fans seemed to take things too far.
“To describe it in my terms,” Fitzpatrick said, “it’s kind of winning away against your biggest rival. Nothing to do with Scottie or the players; it’s the fans that have sort of spurred me on there. It was nice to obviously win, but it never crossed the line. It was just loud. Just loud.”
Scheffler, on the other hand, found the fan support to be a positive force. He made things interesting with birdies on holes 15 and 16, cutting his deficit to one stroke. Although Fitzpatrick missed a 20-foot par putt for the win, Scheffler managed to sneak into the playoff.
“It’s nice always to get some support from the crowd,” Scheffler said. “I thought they were pretty cordial in terms of cheering for me and not cheering against Fitzy, so I was definitely appreciative of that.”
Embracing the Challenge
Did Fitzpatrick, who was a member of the winning European side in 2025, find it odd that the fans turned it into a US-Europe contest in a non-Ryder Cup year? Not really. He said he embraced the chance to shut them up.
“Americans are incredibly patriotic, and I think that was amazing,” he said. “I guess the only issue is they just have shorter memories because we won in October.”
The atmosphere at the event was electric, with fans showing their support in various ways. While some may have pushed the boundaries, the overall sentiment remained positive. For Fitzpatrick, the experience was both challenging and rewarding, reinforcing his belief in the importance of a vibrant and passionate fan base.
