Dionne Warwick, a six-time Grammy Award-winning singer and actress, has recently expressed her concerns regarding the growing enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) among influential figures. While many celebrities and public personalities have praised AI as a “wonderful tool that should be embraced,” Warwick takes a different stance. She argues that AI is being misused to spread false narratives, fake news, and misinformation on social media platforms.

Warwick took to her X account on April 19 to share several examples of AI-generated content that she claims have circulated on Facebook. These images depict scenarios that are not true, such as a photo of her during an alleged appearance on The View, where she appears to be upset with host Whoopi Goldberg. Another image shows her in a hospital bed holding a note that reads, “I’m Battling Cancer—Pray to God for Me.”

She also shared an AI-generated photo of herself at a packed stadium, holding a placard that reads, “DO YOU WANT ME TO PERFORM AT THE WORLD CUP? BE HONEST WITH ME.” Additionally, there was an image of what appeared to be a poster for a Netflix Original documentary featuring her.

In a sarcastic tone, Warwick commented on the positive sentiment surrounding AI, writing:

“Influential people are praising AI as a wonderful tool we should all embrace. On Facebook I have been to the hospital, the World Cup, cussed out Whoopi Goldberg, and I have a Netflix documentary. Wonderful, sure.”

While Warwick did not name any specific individuals, several Hollywood stars have publicly supported AI in recent discussions. For instance, Oscar winner and Hello Sunshine co-founder Reese Witherspoon went viral after expressing her belief that it’s “time to learn about AI” in an April 16 Instagram video. Similarly, Sandra Bullock encouraged movie and TV professionals to “lean into” AI and “make it our friend.”

Dionne Warwick’s Previous Stance on AI

Warwick’s recent comments were not the first time she has voiced her opinions on AI. In September 2023, she spoke exclusively with The Daily Mail and stated that she would never work with AI music. This was in response to a question about whether she would consider using AI technologies to collaborate with her late friends, such as Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.

The question reportedly referenced Paul McCartney’s idea of creating “the final Beatles record” by extracting John Lennon’s vocals from a 1978 demo. Warwick firmly rejected the notion, stating, “No. I wouldn’t.”

She also addressed the possibility of a biopic about her life and career. While she expressed satisfaction with her CNN documentary Dione Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over by Dave Woolley and David Heilbroner, she said she doesn’t think a film would add much to her story. If a biopic were ever made, she called it “wonderful,” but she isn’t actively seeking one.

The Broader Implications of AI in Entertainment

Warwick’s concerns reflect a growing debate within the entertainment industry about the ethical use of AI. As more creators and influencers advocate for embracing AI, critics like Warwick highlight the risks of losing authenticity and integrity in art and media.

Her remarks underscore the need for careful consideration of how AI is used, especially when it comes to generating content that can mislead or distort reality. As the conversation around AI continues to evolve, voices like Warwick’s serve as reminders of the importance of maintaining human creativity and truth in an increasingly digital world.
