A Familiar Disappointment for the Toronto Raptors
For the first time since 2022, the Toronto Raptors have made a return to the NBA playoffs. However, their journey has once again started with a familiar setback. In Game 1, the Raptors fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers with a final score of 126-113. This loss continues a long-standing trend that has defined the franchise over the years.
Despite the excitement of returning to the postseason, the result was a disappointment. The Raptors’ struggles in Game 1 are not new, and they have become a recurring theme for the team.
The Raptors’ Longstanding Game 1 Problem
The Raptors have a troubling record when it comes to Game 1 of the playoffs. They have only managed a 5-18 record in these opening games. This is especially concerning when compared to their overall playoff series record of 10-12.
This issue dates back to the mid-2010s, when the team’s core players, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, struggled in the postseason. During their time together, they lost their first seven Game 1s, finishing just 1-8 in series openers.
Even during the Raptors’ championship season in 2019, they dropped the first game of the playoffs against the Orlando Magic. However, they quickly bounced back, winning the series in five games and eventually claiming the title.
The Playoff Experience Gap
Playoff basketball is a different beast compared to the regular season. This difference is evident in how teams perform under pressure. The Raptors’ young rotation is still learning this reality.
Of the top nine players in Toronto’s rotation, Jakob Poeltl has the most playoff experience with 22 games. Overall, the entire rotation has only 65 games of playoff experience. In contrast, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ rotation has a staggering 466 games of playoff experience, led by James Harden with an impressive 173 games.
This gap in experience is clearly visible in Game 1. While the Raptors are still adjusting to the intensity of the playoffs, the Cavaliers came into the game with a clear understanding of what to expect.
Adjustments Are Needed After a Slow Start
The Raptors had hoped to break their pattern of slow starts in Game 1. Unfortunately, that opportunity has now passed. They need to focus on how they respond in the next games.
The Cavaliers outperformed the Raptors in several key areas. They made more three-point shots, shot a better free throw percentage, grabbed more rebounds, forced more turnovers, and dominated the paint. These are significant challenges that the Raptors must address quickly.
One of the biggest concerns for Toronto was their lack of fastbreak scoring. Despite leading the league in this category during the regular season, they managed only three fastbreak points in the series opener.
If the Raptors want to challenge the Cavaliers, they will need to make these adjustments immediately. The path to success in the playoffs is narrow, and every game counts.
