Davis hits three home runs as Louisville defeats Cal in series finale

Louisville Baseball Secures Victory Over Cal in Series Finale

In a thrilling series finale, the University of Louisville baseball team emerged victorious with an 8-5 win over Cal in Berkeley, California. The Cardinals improved their overall record to 22-18 and 7-11 in ACC play, showcasing strong performances from both their offense and pitching staff.

Tague Davis was the standout performer for Louisville, delivering a three-homer game that highlighted his impressive season. His efforts were complemented by solid contributions from Brandon Shannon and Ty Starke on the mound, who helped secure the win for the Cards.

Early Struggles and Comeback

The game started with Cal taking an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning and putting the Cardinals on their heels. Colton Hartman was forced to exit after allowing multiple hits, but Brandon Shannon stepped in and held the Bears scoreless for the remainder of the inning.

Louisville’s response came in the third inning when Tague Davis hit a two-run home run, cutting the deficit in half. The Cardinals continued to chip away at the lead, tying the game in the fifth inning with a combination of hits and a run-scoring double by Jimmy Nugent.

Momentum Shifts in the Seventh

Shannon maintained control on the mound, keeping Cal off the board while the Cardinals took the lead in the seventh. Davis once again made his mark, hitting a solo home run to extend the lead. Ben Slanker added another run later in the inning with a run-scoring single.

Cal managed to score one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Davis delivered a decisive blow in the eighth inning with a three-run home run, sealing the 8-5 victory for Louisville.

Key Performances

Tague Davis finished the game with four hits, including his third home run of the day and second of the weekend. This marked the first time a Louisville player has hit three home runs in a game since Luke Napleton did so against Virginia Tech in March 2024. Davis now has 24 home runs this season, just one short of the school’s single-season record.

Brandon Shannon (2-2) pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out five batters. Ty Starke earned his first career save by shutting down Cal in the final three innings.

Looking Ahead

With this win, Louisville is set to return home for its next matchup against Kentucky on Tuesday night. The game will take place at Jim Patterson Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
