A Community Comes Together for Officer Nancy Baumann
In the small city of Scranton, Lackawanna County, a powerful display of community support took place as residents rallied behind a local police officer battling cancer. The event, organized by members of the Scranton Police Department, was a heartfelt gesture to assist Officer Nancy Baumann in her ongoing fight against a serious illness.
Nancy Baumann has spent over two decades serving the Scranton community as a dedicated member of the police force. Her commitment to public safety and her compassionate nature have made her a beloved figure among both colleagues and residents. In November 2024, she received a devastating diagnosis—myelodysplasia, commonly referred to as MDS, a type of blood cancer. Despite this challenge, Baumann has shown incredible strength, undergoing a bone marrow transplant and currently being in remission.
The community’s response to her struggle has been nothing short of remarkable. On Sunday, the police department organized a benefit event—a pasta dinner that brought together hundreds of people. This gathering was not only a celebration of Baumann’s resilience but also a way for the community to show their support and solidarity.
A Heartfelt Gesture of Support
Officer Jill Foley, a fellow member of the Scranton Police Department, expressed how much Baumann means to the team. “Officer Baumann has been protecting the city for quite some time. She’s a great officer and an even better person, and obviously it shows with how many people came out today,” Foley said.
The event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a powerful reminder of the bonds formed within the community. Many attendees were people Baumann hadn’t seen in years, including individuals who had interacted with her during her service. For Baumann, this unexpected turnout was overwhelming.
“I was not expecting people that I haven’t seen in a really long time. There are people that came in here off the streets that I dealt with,” Baumann shared. “It just brings tears to my eyes to think how the community really does love somebody else.”
Baumann emphasized that the support from the community has kept her spirits high. “I don’t want anybody to feel sorry for me. You know, ‘Oh my god, she has cancer.’ It’s what I was dealt. God gave me something that I can handle, and he’s helping me handle it,” she added.
A Celebration of Strength and Unity
The funds raised at the event were directed toward Baumann’s medical expenses, providing her with some relief during this difficult time. The success of the benefit was a testament to the power of community and the impact one individual can have on those around them.
For many, the event was a reminder of the importance of standing together in times of need. As Baumann continues her journey, the support she has received from the community will undoubtedly play a vital role in her recovery.
This story is not just about a police officer fighting cancer—it’s about the strength of a community that refuses to let anyone face their struggles alone. Through acts of kindness, compassion, and unity, the people of Scranton have shown that they are more than just neighbors; they are family.
