Chelsea: The Fall That Cost Rosenior His Job

Chelsea’s Short-Lived Managerial Experiment with Liam Rosenior

Chelsea made a shocking decision to sack head coach Liam Rosenior on Wednesday, following a series of poor results that culminated in a 3-0 loss at Brighton. The Englishman had been brought in from Strasbourg in France’s Ligue 1, with the hope of replicating an entertaining football brand at Stamford Bridge through a five-and-a-half-year contract. However, his tenure proved to be one of the most challenging periods in the club’s recent history.

Rosenior initially showed promise, securing six wins in his first seven matches after being appointed. This positive start was quickly overshadowed by a string of ten defeats, marking some of the worst statistics for a Chelsea manager in recent years. Below is a detailed look at the negative stats that defined Rosenior’s brief spell as the Blues’ manager.

Losing Streak

One of the most alarming aspects of Rosenior’s tenure was the team’s losing streak. Chelsea lost seven of their last eight matches under his guidance. This included a five-match league losing streak, which was the first time the club had experienced such a run since 1912—two years before the outbreak of World War I. Additionally, the Blues suffered three consecutive home league defeats for the first time since 1993, a period when the club also faced a midseason collapse and changed managers multiple times during the season.

Worst Goals Drought and Leaky Defence

Chelsea’s struggles extended beyond just losing matches. They failed to score in five consecutive matches for the first time since 1912, with their last goal coming on March 4 against Aston Villa. During this sequence, they conceded 11 goals. The team also lost their last seven matches across the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, conceding 19 goals in total. This stark contrast to the legendary 2004/05 defense, which only let in 15 goals in 38 matches to win the league, highlighted the severity of the defensive issues.

Moreover, Chelsea have conceded 11 goals from corner kicks this season, with seven of those (63%) occurring during Rosenior’s tenure. This is the highest number of goals conceded from corners since the 1994/95 season.

European Humiliation

Despite winning the Club World Cup in July 2025 with a 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea faced a brutal European defeat under Rosenior. The UCL winners avenged their shock loss in devastating fashion, defeating Rosenior’s team in both legs of their round of 16 clash with an 8-2 aggregate score. This marked the club’s joint-worst aggregate defeat in Europe.

The Collapse

Chelsea’s performance took a sharp downturn, with the team earning only four points out of a possible 24. This led to a drop in the Premier League table from fourth place to seventh. The club also suffered seven defeats in their last 10 matches, the most in Europe’s big five leagues since club football resumed in March following the international break.

Additionally, Chelsea managed only four clean sheets in Rosenior’s 23 matches. A run of 12 Premier League matches without a clean sheet was the second-longest in the club’s history.
