Influencer’s Tragic Passing After Cancer Diagnosis

A Teenage Influencer’s Journey with Rare Cancer

Jade Kops, a 19-year-old influencer from the Netherlands, passed away after battling a rare form of cancer. Her journey was documented for a global audience, and she became a symbol of strength and resilience. Jade was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects muscle tissue, when she was just 14 years old.

Her story captured the attention of many, especially through her Instagram posts. On April 6, she shared a heartfelt message addressed to the tumor in her throat, calling it “dear annoying tumour.” Alongside a photo of her cuddling a loved one, she expressed her desire for the tumor to stop, as it was pulling her closer to death each day.

She wrote: “In November I could still make plans, do fun things and hope for more time. Now it feels like that grip is slowly slipping away from my hands. The ticking time bomb has exploded.”

Jade described feeling intensely tired of the tumor and continued: “I don’t want to leave just yet. I still want to be here. Stay for a while, feel for a while and be close to the people I love. So if you don’t leave, but stay anyway, dear tumour…please slow down. Give me time. I’m still happy and nowhere near ready to go.”

Her family announced her passing on Friday morning, sharing a photo of Jade with a touching message: “Intensely sad and incredibly proud of our brave daughter and sister, we would like to let you know that Jade passed away this morning at 5:50 in front of us.”

Jade’s battle with cancer lasted several years, and her story resonated with many. She had over 444,000 followers on Instagram after being diagnosed in 2021. In an Instagram post on March 24, she reflected on the surreal experience of choosing her own spot in a cemetery, describing how she felt disconnected from the world around her.

She wrote: “The idea that in a little while my name will be written here on a grave causes a lot of sadness on the way back. I’m even more grateful for every morning I wake up…”

Alongside her social media presence, Jade also authored a best-selling autobiography titled Forever Young: My Life with Cancer. Over the last five years, she raised €2 million (£1.7 million) for the Princess Maxima Center in Utrecht, Netherlands, which conducts research on childhood cancer.

Jade founded the ‘Jade Uitwaaimomenten Foundation’ alongside her parents. This foundation organizes trips for families affected by childhood cancer, providing support and creating memorable experiences.

Her advocacy work earned her recognition, including a royal distinction in 2024. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau, making her the youngest person to receive this honor. Doctors informed Jade in September 2024 that there were no further treatments available.

Jade will be given a public farewell in Naaldwijk, South Holland, on Friday, May 1, with a guard of honour. Her legacy continues to inspire many, and her story serves as a reminder of the strength and courage that can be found in the face of adversity.
