Maeda’s brace levels Celtic with Hearts at the top

Daizen Maeda Leads Celtic to Victory Over Falkirk

Celtic secured a 3-1 victory against Falkirk, with Japan international Daizen Maeda playing a pivotal role in the win. The champions now sit level on points with William Hill Premiership leaders Hearts, as they continue their pursuit of the title.

Maeda opened the scoring in the 30th minute after charging down a clearance from Keelan Adams and drilling the ball past goalkeeper Nicky Hogarth. His performance was instrumental, as he not only scored twice but also set up another goal for Kieran Tierney just before halftime.

The match saw Celtic face a strong challenge from Falkirk, who managed to pull one back in the 70th minute when substitute Kyrell Wilson scored a brilliant finish. However, Maeda quickly restored Celtic’s two-goal lead in the 83rd minute, slotting home from a low cross by Sebastian Tounekti.

Maeda’s work ethic was once again on display, as he had previously helped Celtic reach the Scottish Cup final by charging down a clearance from St Mirren goalkeeper Ryan Mullen. His efforts in the centre-forward role were crucial once again.

Before the game, the Green Brigade invoked the “spirit of 86” with a large replica of the away strip worn by Celtic when they defeated St Mirren 5-0 in a crucial match 40 years ago. This historical reference highlighted the importance of the current campaign for the club.

While this season’s Celtic team is not as free-flowing as Davie Hay’s side from 1986, they are still determined to make a strong push for the title. However, they currently trail Hearts by four goals and are nine points behind Rangers. With three consecutive wins under their belt, Celtic will need to secure more victories if they hope to close the gap.

The team showed strong performances in the opening stages, although they did not create many clear chances. Falkirk had some opportunities, with Brad Spencer forcing a save from Viljami Sinisalo. Leon McCann and Dylan Tait also had attempts that went wide.

Maeda’s first goal came from 30 yards out, and he later hit a powerful shot straight at Hogarth. Falkirk came close to equalizing when Calvin Miller volleyed wide and Dylan Tait headed off target. However, Maeda’s pressing paid off again when he dispossessed Ben Broggio and set up Tierney for a goal.

Yang Hyun-jun had a goal disallowed for offside, but Wilson eventually found the net with a stunning strike. Manager Martin O’Neill made a change by bringing on Alistair Johnston, who had been sidelined since October due to a hamstring injury. Hogarth made several key saves, including stopping a free-kick from Benjamin Nygren and a header from Liam Scales.

Despite missing a chance for his hat-trick in the closing stages, Maeda’s performance was undoubtedly one of the standout moments of the match. His contributions were vital in securing the win and maintaining Celtic’s position in the league.

As the season progresses, Celtic will need to continue showing resilience and determination. With vocal support from the home fans, they have the potential to challenge both Hearts and Rangers in their upcoming fixtures.
