Red Cards for Hair-Pulling Star, Coach’s Outrage in Semi-Final Drama

Bayern Munich Faces Challenges in Women’s Champions League Semi-Final

In a dramatic encounter during the first leg of the Women’s Champions League semi-final, Bayern Munich found themselves in a tough position after their goal-scorer, Franziska Kett, was sent off for pulling the hair of Barcelona’s Salma Paralluelo. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg in Barcelona on May 4 (AEST).

Kett, who had previously equalized Ewa Pajor’s early strike, received a red card in the 79th minute. This incident came when she pulled Paralluelo by the hair as the Barcelona substitute attempted to escape. The decision was confirmed by a VAR check, and it was clear that the foul was a critical moment in the game.

Bayern coach José Barcala also faced a red card for his protests, but these were ultimately ineffective. Both Kett and Barcala will be suspended for the second leg, which is expected to be a crucial test for the German side.

Impact of Kett’s Absence

Klara Bühl, who returned alongside Giulia Gwinn from injury for Bayern’s Bundesliga-clinching win earlier in the week, acknowledged the difficulty of facing Barcelona without Kett. She highlighted Kett’s strengths, stating:

“She has speed, she has power, good left and right foot,” Bühl said. “It’s really hard for us that she cannot be there but we have a great squad. We have some players that can play there and they will be also amazing.”

Despite the setback, Bayern remains optimistic about their chances of reaching the final. Kett played a vital role in preserving their hopes when she equalized in the 69th minute through a well-executed team move.

A Competitive Matchup

The match saw both teams, newly crowned champions, go head-to-head after securing their domestic titles. However, the previous meeting between the two sides had been a heavy defeat for Bayern, with Barcelona winning 7-1 in the league phase. This led to concerns among Bayern supporters when Pajor opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

Esmee Brugts delivered a precise cross for Pajor to score with a volley, marking her eighth goal in as many appearances in the Champions League this season. Pajor expressed her satisfaction after the goal, saying:

“I’m happy because I can help the team with this and that is the most important thing. Of course, Esmee played a very good ball.”

Key Moments and Adjustments

Despite conceding the opening goal, Bayern improved as the half progressed. Kett forced a good save from Cata Coll before the break, showing her impact on the game. After the interval, Brugts struck the post as Barcelona regained control, only for Kett to equalize once again.

Bayern managed to hold on after Kett’s send-off, keeping the tie closely contested. Pernille Harder, a key forward for Bayern, reflected on the team’s performance:

“We worked hard. We know it’s difficult to play against a team like Barcelona that’s good at finding spaces,” Harder said. “We worked really hard, found our moments to go in transitions and we also got a goal. Then the red card and then we just had to fight the last minutes.”

Other Semi-Final Matchup

Meanwhile, the other semi-final sees trophy-holder Arsenal face eight-time champion Lyon. The final is set to take place in Oslo on May 24 (AEST), with Barcelona aiming to reach it for the sixth consecutive year.
