Dees unveil strategy to elevate Pickett to AFL’s elite

Kysaiah Pickett’s Rise as a Star in the AFL

Melbourne coach Steven King is confident that Kysaiah Pickett has the potential to become one of the best players in the Australian Football League (AFL). The 24-year-old has made a strong start to the season, with his performances standing out as a key factor in the team’s success.

Pickett’s recent highlight came during the match against Richmond, where he delivered a mark-of-the-year contender. His spectacular leap over Campbell Gray was part of an impressive display that earned him the title of best-on-ground. This achievement came just days after Pickett took a brief trip to Darwin to see his daughter.

King, who is in his first year as coach, has been impressed by Pickett’s determination to be the best since joining the Demons. This season, Pickett has been given the opportunity to flourish in a full-time midfield role, and the results have been evident.

“As a coach, you want to give all your players the opportunity to be the best they can, but ultimately it comes down to their own desire to believe they can,” King said. “He’s got all the tools to be the best, and he’s pretty competitive. He doesn’t just want to be a highlight reel; he wants to be the best each week.”

This mindset has led Pickett to take on more midfield responsibilities, and King believes this commitment is reflected in his performance on the field. “He’s bought in wholeheartedly, and what you see now is recognition for the work he puts in.”

King also shared details about Pickett’s quick interstate trip to Darwin, which was arranged to help balance his personal life with his professional commitments. “I’d love to give all my players the flexibility required, and that’s a two-way trust,” King explained. “Kozzy held up his end of the bargain not just by the way he played, but what he did before he left, what he did when he got back, and what’s in place for him up in Darwin.”

The coaching staff has planned out Pickett’s schedule for the year, ensuring that it aligns with both his personal and professional needs. “It’s not just on a whim or a drop of the hat thing. We’ve sort of planned out what the year might look like, and that’s in consultation with Koz and his manager.”

As Pickett’s influence on the game grows, so does the attention from opponents. He is expected to face one of the league’s top stoppers, James Jordon, when Melbourne takes on Sydney at the SCG on Sunday.

“He’s had a couple of taggers this year, and it comes back to his work-rate and two-way run—things people can’t take away from you,” King said. “That match-up will come, so we need to help Kozzy, but if he plays to his strengths, he’s pretty hard to tag.”

Harrison Petty’s Recovery Progress

In addition to Pickett’s progress, Melbourne is hopeful that Harrison Petty could return to action against Sydney after a concerning health episode earlier this month. The 26-year-old tall became unsteady on his feet during the win over Brisbane and had to be helped from the field.

Petty has been cleared of concussion, although he was placed in the protocols as a precaution. He still has several steps to complete before receiving the green light to play again.

“At this stage, it looks like a type of migraine, which is great news,” King said. “He’s still in the protocols, but we’re really bullish around if he gets through them this week, he’ll be in a really good place to potentially play.”
