Garret Anderson’s Final Battle: Serious Medical Conditions Before Death at 53

A Legacy of Excellence and Health Struggles

Garret Anderson, a revered figure in the world of baseball, passed away at the age of 53 earlier this month. His death has left a profound impact on fans and fellow players alike, as they remember not only his achievements on the field but also the health challenges he faced in his final years.

According to the coroner’s findings, Anderson died from acute necrotizing pancreatitis, a severe condition that can lead to significant damage to the pancreas. However, a subsequent autopsy revealed additional serious medical issues that had been affecting the former Los Angeles Angels star.

The results of the autopsy indicated that Anderson suffered from a ‘massive fatty liver’ that weighed nearly 9.2lbs. This is significantly higher than the average adult male’s liver weight, which typically ranges between 3-4lbs. The presence of such an extensive amount of fat in the liver is indicative of ‘severe hepatic steatosis,’ the most advanced stage of fat accumulation in the organ.

In addition to the fatty liver, Anderson was diagnosed with ‘hypertensive-type cardiovascular disease,’ a condition that affects the heart and blood vessels. He also had cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, which was found to weigh 450g during the autopsy. For an average adult male, the heart typically weighs between 250 and 350 grams.

Anderson’s passing occurred on April 16, following a medical emergency reported at his home in Newport Beach, California. His wife, Teresa, initially believed that her husband had died from a heart attack, highlighting the complexity of his health conditions.

A Champion on the Field

Garret Anderson was more than just a player; he was a symbol of dedication and excellence for the Angels. Over his 17-year career, he became a three-time All-Star and the organization’s all-time hits leader. His most memorable moment came in 2002 when he helped the Angels win the World Series. During the seven-game series against the San Francisco Giants, Anderson went 9-for-32, driving in six runs and playing a crucial role in the team’s victory.

“Garret was really the foundation of our championship run back in 2002,” said his manager, Mike Scioscia, reflecting on Anderson’s contributions. “He played hard, he wanted to win. He just was a terrific talent and a terrific person.”

A Lasting Impact

Anderson was drafted by the Angels in 1990 and spent 15 seasons with the team before finishing his career with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers. After retiring, he returned to the Angels as a broadcaster, continuing to be a part of the organization he loved.

His contributions to the team were recognized in 2016 when he was inducted into the Angels’ Hall of Fame. Anderson often spoke about his greatest attribute being the ability to put the team before his own success, a testament to his character and commitment.

Tributes and Remembrance

The Angels have announced that they will wear a patch on their jerseys in tribute to Anderson for the rest of the 2026 season. The patch will feature his initials and the years of his life, serving as a lasting reminder of his legacy.

In a statement, the Angels expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of Anderson: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Angels Hall of Famer Garret Anderson. Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class, and loyalty throughout his career and beyond. We extend our deepest condolences to Garret’s wife Teresa, daughters Brianne and Bailey, son Garret ‘Trey’ Anderson III, and his entire family.”

A Life Well Lived

Anderson’s journey from growing up in Los Angeles to becoming a Hall of Famer is a story of perseverance and passion. His career statistics speak volumes about his impact on the game, with impressive numbers in games played (2,013), hits (2,368), RBIs (1,292), and grand slams (eight).

As the Angels continue their 2026 season, they carry the memory of Anderson with them, honoring his contributions both on and off the field. His legacy will live on through the countless fans who admired his talent, work ethic, and dedication to the sport he loved.
