Smith endorses Bellamy’s bold Origin decision as Storm struggle

Queensland Maroons and the Impact of Craig Bellamy’s Decision

Cameron Smith, a legendary figure in the world of rugby league, has expressed his support for Craig Bellamy’s decision to step away from his role with the New South Wales team. This move comes at a time when Melbourne Storm is experiencing a challenging period, having lost six consecutive matches. The recent defeat against the Rabbitohs left Bellamy feeling deeply embarrassed, describing it as the most humiliating moment in his football career.

Bellamy’s decision to focus solely on the Storm was first reported by Wide World of Sports’ The Mole in February before the season began. Now, two months later, this has been confirmed. Smith believes that Bellamy’s choice to prioritize the club is crucial during these tough times.

“I remember when he coached the Blues in 2008, ’09 and ’10 and I remember him finishing up that season and saying it took a lot of focus away from his club preparation,” Smith said on Nine’s 100% Footy. “His club is in a really difficult spot right now so I think he’s made the right decision to go back and focus fully on the Storm.”

Navigating Unfamiliar Territory

Smith described Melbourne’s current form as “unfamiliar territory” for the players. He noted that the team appears “flat” and “low on confidence.” Reflecting on past challenges, Smith shared a story from the 2012 season when his team faced a similar situation.

During that time, the team lost five games in a row, and Bellamy had a significant conversation with Smith after a match against the Dragons. “I remember the fifth consecutive game we lost against the Dragons down at WIN Stadium and Craig Bellamy came walking out into the field and met me post-game and looked at me and said ‘I don’t know where to go from here,’” Smith explained.

The team then focused on simplifying their approach, concentrating on basic fundamentals such as tackling and set plays. “Then all we spoke about and what we did the next week was simplify our football, not worry about all the fancy plays, let’s strip it right back, make our tackles, complete our sets and let’s just work hard and it will turn and it did. I don’t think we lost a game for the rest of that season once we stripped everything back and really simplified the part of our football and preparation.”

Addressing Training Standards

Smith also highlighted the concerns raised by Cameron Munster and Harry Grant regarding their training standards not translating to performance on game day. “That’s a good thing,” he said. “If their training and preparation hadn’t been good, then there’s a lot of issues going on. They just need to stick at it.”

The Storm is set to face the Dolphins next on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. As the team looks to turn their fortunes around, the support from experienced figures like Smith and Bellamy could prove invaluable.
