Carlton squanders half-time lead as Voss blames defense, Tigers finally beat Eagles

Carlton’s Defensive Struggles Continue

Carlton coach Michael Voss has openly acknowledged that his team’s defense is not meeting the required standards, following another second-half collapse in their latest match. The Blues faced a tough loss to St Kilda at Dockland Stadium, where they were defeated 16.12 (108) to 9.15 (69). This result adds to the growing pressure on Voss, who has seen his side lose several games despite leading at half-time.

Key Match Results from Saturday

  • St Kilda defeated Carlton with a score of 16.12 (108) to 9.15 (69)
  • Geelong Cats overpowered North Melbourne Kangaroos with a final score of 21.9 (135) to 13.8 (86)
  • Richmond secured a win against West Coast Eagles, ending a 12-game losing streak with a 15.9 (99) to 13.10 (88 victory)
  • Brisbane Lions dominated Essendon with a strong performance, winning 22.11 (143) to 11.13 (79)

St Kilda showcased an impressive second-half display, kicking 12 of the last 14 goals, including a remarkable nine in a row. This surge allowed them to defeat the Blues by 39 points. Despite leading at half-time, Carlton was unable to maintain their momentum, suffering a significant blow in the third term when the Saints kicked eight goals.

Carlton has only managed one win out of eight matches this season, but they have led at half-time in six of those games. However, this pattern of collapsing in the second half has become a recurring issue for the team.

Voss’s Comments on Team Performance

Voss expressed his concerns about the team’s defensive capabilities during a press conference after the match. He highlighted the team’s inability to maintain pressure and defend effectively when in a lead.

“It’s just been a familiar pattern,” Voss said. “We lose center square bounce … and then our inability to continue to defend when we’re up against isn’t at the level it needs to be at.”

He emphasized that the team’s defensive efforts are not consistent enough throughout the game, which is holding them back from achieving better results.

Despite these challenges, Voss defended his tactics, pointing to the team’s first-half performance as a positive sign of what they are capable of. He also noted the Blues’ strong start in the fourth quarter, where they created several scoring chances. However, it was the Saints who capitalized on the opportunity, kicking the first three goals of the final term.

“I think our ability and intent is not where it needs to be,” Voss added. “Our ability to be able to do it for a longer period of time is not at the level it needs to be at. And when the game is against you, you need to defend and you need to fight, and we are not doing it well enough.”
