Daniel Farke Hesitant to Celebrate as Leeds Extend Lead

Leeds United Secures Critical Win, But Daniel Farke Remains Cautious

Leeds United secured a crucial 3-1 victory over already-relegated Burnley at Elland Road, boosting their Premier League survival hopes. The win saw the club move nine points clear of the bottom three, but manager Daniel Farke has made it clear that celebrations are not yet in order.

Anton Stach opened the scoring with a brilliant early goal, and second-half strikes from Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed the win. Despite Loum Tchaouna’s consolation goal for Burnley, Leeds extended their unbeaten league run to six matches, moving them up to 14th place on 43 points.

Farke emphasized that the team will only celebrate once safety is mathematically confirmed. “We will just celebrate once it’s mathematically done,” he said. “43 points is good, but I don’t want to stop on 43 points.”

He added: “I don’t see why we should stop right now. To just think, ‘hopefully it’s enough,’ because we’re in such a good shape and are delivering so many good performances. I said before the game we have 12 points to fight for. Right now, we have the first three under our belts and we want to win the following nine.”

Strong Second Half Performance

The match was a testament to Leeds’ resilience, as they scored twice in four minutes during the second half through Okafor and Calvert-Lewin. This came after the team’s recent FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley against Chelsea, where they fell short in a high-stakes encounter.

Farke praised his players for maintaining their focus and delivering strong results despite the pressure. “I’m just proud of my players and have to give them so many compliments because to live in such a pressure period and deliver in your last four Premier League games 10 points, and six (games) unbeaten,” he said.

He also highlighted the team’s historical cup run, noting that they managed to concentrate on important games even when key players were missing. “And we also had a historical cup run where we also concentrated in important games. It feels amazing. And also to keep in mind how many key players were out in these games. Joe Rodon missed a lot, Anton Stach, Jaka (Bijol), Noah Okafor right now with problems.”

Team Spirit and Unity

Farke praised the mentality, work ethic, unity, and spirit within the squad. “The mentality, work ethic, unity and the spirit in the dressing room is really second to none. I’m just so proud of what they are delivering at the moment.”

Burnley’s relegation was confirmed after their 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City last week, and the club parted ways with manager Scott Parker by mutual consent on Thursday. Interim manager Mike Jackson admitted he had not considered taking over permanently.

Jackson said: “I’m not trying to be disrespectful to you. It’s just something that hasn’t even been mentioned. I was literally told on (Thursday) morning, to try and prep a team to come to Leeds and that’s been my sole focus.”

Challenges for Burnley

Burnley suffered their fifth straight league defeat, and have won only one of their last 25 matches in the top flight. Jackson acknowledged the impact of Parker’s departure on the team. “I knew this game could probably go one or two ways with what’s happened in the last 24 hours,” he said.

“It’s been a big shock to the group, in terms of Scott leaving and the relationship he had with the players, and I think it knocked them a bit. I think the big thing for me with Scott leaving is he was a really close friend and a guy who handled himself unbelievably throughout the year.”

A New Era for Burnley

Jackson expressed admiration for Parker’s dignity and professionalism. “His dignity and the way he has handled himself, I’ve got full admiration for that.”

As the Premier League season approaches its conclusion, both Leeds and Burnley face critical moments. While Leeds continue to push for safety, Burnley must navigate a difficult transition period under new leadership. The coming weeks will determine the fates of both clubs, with fans across the league watching closely.
