Daniel Farke Hesitant to Celebrate as Leeds Extend Lead

Leeds United Secures Critical Win, But Daniel Farke Remains Cautious

Leeds United secured a crucial 3-1 victory over already-relegated Burnley at Elland Road, marking a significant step in their fight for Premier League survival. The win lifted the team to 14th place with 43 points, nine points clear of the bottom three. However, manager Daniel Farke has made it clear that celebration is not yet in the cards.

Anton Stach opened the scoring with a brilliant early goal, and Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin added two more in the second half to seal the win. Despite Loum Tchaouna’s consolation goal for Burnley, Leeds extended their unbeaten league run to six matches, showcasing their resilience and determination.

Farke emphasized that the team will only celebrate once their safety is mathematically confirmed. “We will just celebrate once it’s mathematically done,” he said. “43 points is good, but I don’t want to stop on 43 points. I don’t see why we should stop right now. To just think, ‘hopefully it’s enough,’ because we’re in such a good shape and are delivering so many good performances.”

He also highlighted the importance of the remaining games. “I said before the game we have 12 points to fight for. Right now, we have the first three under our belts and we want to win the following nine.”

The win came just days after a heavy defeat in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, but Leeds bounced back strongly. Farke praised his players for their performance under pressure. “I’m just proud of my players and have to give them so many compliments because to live in such a pressure period and deliver in your last four Premier League games 10 points, and six (games) unbeaten,” he said.

He also acknowledged the challenges they faced, including the absence of key players like Joe Rodon, Anton Stach, Jaka Bijol, and Noah Okafor. “The mentality, work ethic, unity and the spirit in the dressing room is really second to none. I’m just so proud of what they are delivering at the moment.”

Burnley’s Struggles Continue

Burnley’s relegation was confirmed after a 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City, and they parted ways with manager Scott Parker by mutual consent on Thursday. Interim manager Mike Jackson revealed that he had not considered taking over permanently.

“I’m not trying to be disrespectful to you. It’s just something that hasn’t even been mentioned,” Jackson said. “I was literally told on (Thursday) morning, to try and prep a team to come to Leeds and that’s been my sole focus.”

Burnley suffered their fifth straight league defeat, and they have won only one of their last 25 matches in the top flight. Jackson admitted the shock of Parker’s departure affected the team. “I knew this game could probably go one or two ways with what’s happened in the last 24 hours,” he said. “It’s been a big shock to the group, in terms of Scott leaving and the relationship he had with the players, and I think it knocked them a bit.”

Jackson also expressed admiration for Parker’s leadership. “The big thing for me with Scott leaving is he was a really close friend and a guy who handled himself unbelievably throughout the year. His dignity and the way he has handled himself, I’ve got full admiration for that.”
