G8 Education Announces Closure of 40 Childcare Centres Across Australia
G8 Education, a prominent childcare provider in Australia, has announced the closure of 40 centres across the country. This decision comes at a challenging time for thousands of parents who now need to find alternative care arrangements for their children.
The company operates 395 childcare and early learning centres under various brands, including Headstart, Jellybeans, Kool Kids, and Kindy Patch Kids. G8 Education employs approximately 8,800 staff members and serves around 36,000 children nationwide.
The closures were announced on Wednesday, just before the company’s annual general meeting. The affected states include Victoria and Western Australia, each losing 12 centres, while New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia will also see several centres close.

Impact of Child Abuse Allegations
Last year, G8 Education faced a major crisis when one of its staff members, Joshua Dale Brown, was charged with over 70 child sex offences against eight children aged under two. The alleged abuse occurred at five G8 centres as well as three other centres between April 2022 and January 2023.
In response to the incident, G8 Education’s chief executive, Pejman Okhovat, addressed shareholders during the announcement. He highlighted that cost of living pressures continue to influence family decisions regarding childcare. Additionally, he mentioned that serious incidents reported nationally have led to increased regulatory scrutiny and a stronger focus on safety within the sector.
Okhovat acknowledged that these incidents have impacted family confidence and trust across Australia. He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting families and team members during this difficult period. “We continue to do everything we can to give authorities the best chance of achieving justice for the families involved,” he said.
He added that because the matter is currently before the courts, it is not appropriate to comment further on the specific details. However, he reiterated that safety is one of G8 Education’s core values and shapes every decision the company makes.
“There is no higher priority than the safety and wellbeing of children in our care,” Okhovat stated. “We have zero tolerance for any behaviour that compromises their safety.”
Enhanced Safety Measures
To address concerns about child safety, G8 Education rolled out CCTV across all its facilities in July. This move was aimed at increasing transparency and ensuring the well-being of children in their care.
In a statement, G8 described the closures as a “suspension.” The company said it would explore longer-term options for those centres, including lease surrender, divestment, or other alternatives. While the exact reasons for the closures remain unclear, the company has indicated that it is working through the challenges to ensure the continued safety and stability of its operations.
Ongoing Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite the setbacks, G8 Education remains focused on its mission to provide quality childcare and early learning services. The company’s leadership has emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of safety and trust with both families and employees.
As the situation unfolds, the impact on parents, staff, and the broader community will be closely monitored. With the ongoing legal proceedings and the company’s efforts to restructure its operations, the future of G8 Education remains uncertain but under active review.
