New Leadership for Sydney Sixers
James Hopes has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sydney Sixers, marking a significant change for the BBL club as they aim to break a six-year title drought. Hopes, a former Australian international all-rounder, has signed a two-year contract and will replace Greg Shipperd, who was recently dismissed from his role.
Shipperd’s departure came just one year into a two-year contract extension, despite leading the Sixers to the BBL final against Perth last season. Over his 11-season tenure, he guided the team to eight consecutive finals series and secured back-to-back titles in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

The Sixers are the second-most successful franchise in Big Bash history, having won three titles, with the Scorchers holding the record of six. Shipperd also stepped down from his position as head coach of the NSW men’s team, which has now been taken over by former Test wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.
Hopes is stepping into his first head coaching role after previously serving as the bowling coach for the Indian Premier League team Punjab Kings and the Major League Cricket team Washington Freedom. His career as a player included representing Australia in 84 ODIs and 12 T20s, and he played for the Queensland Bulls from 2000 to 2016.
In a statement, Hopes expressed his excitement about joining the Sydney Sixers. “I’m incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and connection with its fans,” he said. “I’m excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers’ success in the BBL.”
