Santana’s Alex Ligertwood passes away at 79, weeks after final performance

Alex Ligertwood has passed away at the age of 79, just weeks after delivering his final performance on stage. The former vocalist of Santana played a pivotal role in defining the band’s iconic sound, which became famous for hits like Smooth and Maria Maria.

Ligertwood died “peacefully” in his sleep with his dog Bobo by his side, as revealed in a statement from his wife, Shawn Brogan. The news of his passing was shared via Facebook on Saturday, accompanied by photos of the musician. In her post, Brogan wrote: “Alex was loved by so many. If you knew him, you loved him. He touched so many with his extraordinary voice. He was all heart and soul.”

She also reflected on his passion for music, stating that it was his “favourite thing in life to make music, sing, and share his gift.” Brogan expressed gratitude for his final show, saying: “I’m grateful for that. He did it his way, on his terms, till the end. I will always love you, my sweet Alex.” She asked fans to keep her and their children in their prayers.

Ligertwood had been dealing with health issues in the years leading up to his death, according to reports. The Glasgow-born singer was part of Santana’s rotating lineup from 1979 to 1994, contributing to albums such as 1979’s Marathon and 1981’s Zebop! His vocal performances can be heard on tracks like You Know That I Love You (1979) and Winning (1981).

Tributes have already begun pouring in for the legendary frontman, who first picked up a guitar in the 1950s. Brandon Paul, a fellow musician who toured with Ligertwood in recent years as part of Icons of Classic Rock, described him as a “world-class professional.”

Paul said: “His voice was a force of nature – soulful, from the heart, and legendary every single night. Beyond the music, he was an amazing human being and a dear friend.”

After leaving Santana, Ligertwood continued to perform with various acts, including the tribute band The Magic of Santana. A spokesperson for the group shared a heartfelt message on Facebook: “We are so sad! We just heard about Alex J Ligertwood passing away! We had a great journey together with him and we learned so much about music, passion, and friendship. He was one of the best singers on this planet, and we will deeply miss him. Thank you, Alex, for everything!”

Ligertwood’s legacy continues to live on through his music and the impact he had on those who knew him. Fans and colleagues alike are mourning the loss of a true icon.
