Sydney embraces AFL’s new trend

Sydney’s Strategy Shift: Exploring a Two-Ruck Combination

Sydney is considering a two-ruck combination in the 2026 season as part of its strategy to support in-form ruckman Brodie Grundy. This move comes in response to recent rule changes that favor jumping talls, particularly in center-ball situations, and the introduction of the five-man bench. These adjustments have prompted several teams to explore similar strategies.

Brodie Grundy has been performing at his best, and Swans coach Dean Cox acknowledges the importance of maintaining his form. However, he also admits that the team may need to consider a dual-ruck approach to ensure Grundy’s longevity throughout the long season.

“I think at some point we will,” Cox said on SEN. “It’s taken a fair bit of our discussions this week with what Max (Gawn) can do as well. The other part is that, looking at Brodie and what he can do. It is a long season. How do we look after him as well as we possibly can as well as allowing to play the best football.”

Ruck Pairing Considerations

Peter Ladhams, who was previously a key player, has been moved to the VFL for the 2026 season. Coach Cox has opted for Joel Amartey and Logan McDonald to support Grundy. However, Ladhams’ impressive performances in the reserves have sparked discussions about his potential return to the senior side.

Ladhams recently recorded a remarkable performance, with 39 disposals, 47 hit-outs, 15 clearances, seven inside 50s, five score involvements, and a goal. This followed previous strong showings, including two 20-plus possession games and 24 hit-outs. His form has forced the coaching staff to reconsider their selection strategy.

Hayden McLean is also being considered as an option, applying pressure on McDonald within the senior squad. McLean has been consistent, kicking 13 goals in four games, including nine in the last two matches. His performances make him a viable candidate for selection.

Logan McDonald, however, has had a challenging start to the 2026 season despite Sydney’s overall scoring success. He has managed to kick nine goals but struggled in a recent game against the Western Bulldogs, where he recorded only five possessions and one behind. Although he retained his spot in the team against Melbourne, his future remains uncertain.

Successful Models from Other Teams

Several teams have successfully implemented a two-ruck strategy. Hawthorn and Fremantle have demonstrated the effectiveness of having two genuine ruckmen on the field. Collingwood has also embraced this approach by bringing in Oscar Steene to support Darcy Cameron.

St Kilda’s experiment with Rowan Marshall and Tom De Koning has been successful so far, which is a model that Cox and the Swans are likely to follow. Similarly, Gold Coast is exploring a two-ruck attack, pairing Jarrod Witts with Ned Moyle.

Conclusion

As the 2026 season approaches, Sydney’s decision to consider a two-ruck combination reflects a strategic shift aimed at maximizing the strengths of its players while ensuring their long-term development. With Grundy in top form and Ladhams showing promise in the VFL, the coaching staff faces a tough decision. The success of similar strategies in other teams suggests that this could be a path worth exploring for the Swans.
