He did it his way, on his terms, till the end.”

Her message concluded with a heartfelt farewell: “I will always love you, my sweet Alex. Rest in peace. Soar and sing with the angels, my love. Please keep me & his family, Lynn & Stewart Locke, Alex, Jenny, Kali, Merci & Marilo in your prayers.”

Born in Drumchapel, Glasgow, Ligertwood began his musical journey in the 1950s when he picked up the guitar. His career took off when he joined the legendary band Santana, which was founded by Carlos Santana in 1966. Ligertwood was part of the band from 1979 to 1994, contributing to some of their most celebrated albums, including 1979’s Marathon, 1981’s Zebop!, and Sacred Fire: Live In South America, released in 1993.

After leaving Santana, Ligertwood continued to perform with various groups, including the German tribute band The Magic Of Santana, as well as Senate, Jeff Beck Group, and the Average White Band. His versatility and talent allowed him to thrive in different musical settings, cementing his reputation as a gifted performer.

Ligertwood was believed to have been living in Santa Monica, California, at the time of his passing. The Magic Of Santana expressed their grief on social media, sharing how much they valued their time with him. “We are so sad! We just heard about Alex J Ligertwood passed away! We had a great journey together with him and we learned so much about music, passion and friendship. He was one of the best singer on this planet and we will deeply miss him.
