NRL mourns as star player announces sudden retirement at 30

Daniel Saifiti Announces Immediate Retirement from NRL

Daniel Saifiti, a former Newcastle forward and current Dolphins player, has officially announced his retirement from the National Rugby League (NRL) after playing his last game. The 30-year-old made the decision on Monday, marking the end of a career that spanned over a decade in the sport.

Saifiti had not played in over 12 months due to a severe shoulder injury, which significantly impacted his performance. He managed only eight games in the 2025 season before being sidelined. Reports suggested that his retirement might be on medical grounds, and the Dolphins confirmed this sad news on Monday.

In a statement, Dolphins CEO Terry Reader expressed his sentiments about Saifiti’s contribution. “There is no doubt Daniel was our best player in the first eight weeks of last year and we have really missed him since then,” he said. “It is sad for it to end this way but Daniel has had a career he can be proud of, and he will continue to add to our club off the field this year.”

The Dolphins highlighted Saifiti’s impact on the team, even though his time on the field was limited. “While his time on the field in Dolphins colours was brief, Saifiti’s impact on the group was immediate. The 30-year-old brought experience, professionalism and a team-first mentality, helping to drive standards and support the club’s continued growth.”

Saifiti began his NRL journey with the Newcastle Knights in 2016, playing a total of 191 games. He spent 183 games with the Knights before making the move to the Dolphins in 2025. As a Fijian international, he represented his country in three Tests and seven State of Origin games for New South Wales between 2019 and 2021. His contributions helped the Blues win the Origin series in 2019 and 2021, with a notable try in Game 1 of the 2021 series.

A medical retirement allows teams to receive compensation from the NRL for the remainder of a player’s contract. The Dolphins will continue to support Saifiti while the NRL provides financial remuneration to the club.

Fan Reactions to Saifiti’s Retirement

NRL fans were deeply affected by the news of Saifiti’s medical retirement. Social media was flooded with messages expressing their sadness. One fan wrote: “That is so sad. That kid lifted us out of a ditch in the worst days. Once a Knight….” Another commented: “That is sad news. I can only wish him well for his future.”

A third fan added: “That’s awful news. Hopefully he can return to the Knights in some capacity soon in a coaching role or something.”

Saifiti underwent surgery on his shoulder at the end of 2025 after initially suffering the injury in April of that year. He was expected to make a comeback in the first few games of the 2026 season, but has yet to return to the field.

Despite the challenges, Saifiti’s legacy in the NRL remains strong, with many remembering his contributions both on and off the field.
