Tszyu condemns ‘disrespectful’ opponent as blockbuster fight unveiled

A Clash of Titans: Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence Jr Prepare for a High-Stakes Showdown

Australian boxing sensation Tim Tszyu has been making waves in the world of professional boxing, not only for his skills in the ring but also for his strong personality and determination. As he prepares to face former undisputed champion Errol Spence Jr on July 26 in Australia, Tszyu is clearly stepping into the spotlight with confidence and a fierce attitude.

This bout, promoted by No Limit Boxing, is being hailed as one of the most significant fight events ever held in the country. It marks a crucial moment in Tszyu’s career, especially after a challenging period that saw him suffer three consecutive losses in America over the span of 15 months. These defeats included losing his super welterweight title to Sebastian Fundora in March 2024, followed by demoralizing losses to Bakharam Murtazaliev and again to Fundora.

Despite these setbacks, Tszyu remains focused on proving himself as one of the best fighters in the world. However, his recent interactions with Spence have sparked some tension, with Tszyu calling the American “disrespectful” after being snubbed during a handshake attempt.

The Tension Between Tszyu and Spence

During a recent event in America, Tszyu extended a hand to Spence, but the American refused and walked away. This incident was followed by a press conference where Spence took the opportunity to criticize Tszyu, even bringing up the boxer’s father, Kostya, in the conversation.

“I think it’s cute. He’s no calibre of his father, so he can’t compare himself to his pops,” Spence said. “He’s fighting me, he’s trying to get out of his dad’s shadow.”

Tszyu, who has previously praised Spence as one of the best fighters of their generation, was clearly upset by the American’s behavior. “I’m a very respectful guy, I came up to him just before to try shake his hand and he just walked past me like a disrespectful f—, that just shows the type of person he is,” Tszyu said.

A War of Words

Spence, on the other hand, claims that Tszyu has been making disparaging remarks about him on social media. He expressed frustration over the idea of shaking hands with Tszyu, stating, “I’m not one of those guys, when you want to talk shit on social media and then you want to shake my hand.”

“[I] heard all the stuff on social media, then you want to give me a hug… I’m not cool with that. We can hug after the fight. It’s a war. I’m not here to shake and hug my opponents, it’s a war,” Spence said.

He added, “I’m coming to his home town, coming to his territory, and I’m looking to take over. So why would I want to shake his hand? He’s coming to destroy me, to retire me. I’m coming to show him he’s not up to my pedigree.”

The Venue and the Fight Strategy

While the exact venue for the July 26 fight has yet to be announced, there are several potential locations under consideration. Tszyu’s last fight was in Wollongong, but a large Sydney venue seems like the obvious choice given the expected crowd. However, the Tszyu family has strong ties to Newcastle, which they refer to as Tszyucastle, and it’s possible that the fight could be held there instead.

Since his last loss to Fundora in July last year, Tszyu has bounced back with victories against Anthony Velazquez and Denis Nurja, showing signs of recovery and renewed focus.

Looking Ahead

As the countdown to the big fight continues, both Tszyu and Spence are preparing for what promises to be a thrilling showdown. With the stakes high and the rivalry growing, fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the clash between two of the sport’s top talents.
