Vitor Pereira Hopes for ‘Fantastic’ Finish After Forest’s Win at Chelsea

Nottingham Forest’s Remarkable Victory at Stamford Bridge

Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has expressed confidence that his team can finish the season “in a fantastic way” following their impressive 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This win not only condemned the home side to their sixth consecutive Premier League defeat but also marked one of the worst losing streaks for Chelsea since 1993.

Forest’s performance was in stark contrast to the struggling home side, as they arrived at west London with a second-string XI and still managed to secure a convincing win. The victory helped them pull six points clear of the relegation zone, giving them a significant boost in their fight for survival.

Pereira made eight changes to his starting lineup ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa, with seven of the incoming outfield players having only 11 league appearances between them this season. Despite this, the team showed remarkable resilience and quality on the pitch.

Taiwo Awoniyi opened the scoring for Forest just 98 seconds into the match, followed by Igor Jesus scoring a penalty before half-time. Awoniyi then added a third goal early in the second half, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess.

Key Moments and Injuries

The match was not without its challenges, as Chelsea suffered a serious head injury to teenage debutant Jesse Derry late in the first half. Derry had to leave the field on a stretcher with an oxygen mask after colliding with Zach Abbott. Later updates confirmed that Derry was conscious in hospital, which provided some relief to the club and fans.

Cole Palmer missed a crucial penalty, adding to the frustration for the home side. However, they finally broke their two-month scoring drought in the league when Joao Pedro scored a stoppage-time overhead kick. Despite this, Forest’s performance was outstanding, and they took a significant step closer to securing their place in the league.

“This is the spirit of this group,” said Pereira, who was appointed as Forest’s fourth manager of the season in February. “I said to them, you are a special group because you work with four different managers, different ways to think football, different methodologies. And you faced a difficult season.”

Pereira emphasized the importance of unity and resilience within the team, highlighting that they have maintained their friendship and confidence despite the challenges. He believes that the current moment in the season will determine their fate.

“We can finish the season in a fantastic way,” he added.

Additional Injuries and Medical Updates

Further injuries occurred in the second half when Morgan Gibbs-White and Robert Sanchez both went off after collisions. Pereira expressed hope that Gibbs-White would be available for the upcoming European match against Aston Villa.

“He has a deep cut. We’ll see. He’s a fighter, he has a strong mentality. I hope our medical department can do magic to put him in condition,” the Portuguese manager said.

Gibbs-White shared a picture of a nasty wound above his eye on Instagram, along with a message expressing gratitude for the support and celebrating the win. Pereira also confirmed that Zach Abbott was okay after their collision.

Chelsea’s Disappointment and Future Outlook

Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane acknowledged the positive signs regarding Derry’s condition. The teenager was making his debut after late injuries to Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho. McFarlane expressed his satisfaction with Derry’s performance while he was on the pitch, but emphasized that more important matters were at hand.

“The result ended whatever faint hope remained of Chelsea qualifying for a Champions League via a top-five finish, as they dropped to ninth,” said McFarlane. “Really disappointed with the performance and result,” he added. “I don’t think we got to our level today that I know we’re capable of.”

Despite the setback, McFarlane remains optimistic about the team’s ability to perform well in the remaining games of the season. “I know the group. They are driven, they want what’s best for themselves and what’s best for the club. We’re going to try and win every single game until the end of the season.”
