‘I’ll send a private plane’: Mark Wood shares wild IPL owner offer during his illness

A Unique Story from Mark Wood’s IPL Experience

Mark Wood, the England pace bowler, has shared an intriguing story from his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), offering a rare glimpse into the intense pressures and unusual situations that can arise within the competition. In an interview on BBC’s Strategic Timeout, Wood revealed how he was once pressured by a franchise owner to play a match despite being extremely unwell.

The incident occurred during a season when Wood was suffering from a high fever and was unable to leave his bed. Over the following days, he received regular updates and check-ups from the team doctors. Wood described how, after about five games, his condition worsened, and the next match was only three days away.

“I wasn’t very well after about five games, and the (next) game was in about three days’ time. Every half an hour, the doctor would stay back, come to my room, check on my vitals.”

The Owner’s Unusual Proposal

Despite his deteriorating health, the franchise owner continued to reach out, asking when Wood would be ready to play the next match. One day, the owner called and asked, “How’re you feeling? Ready to go?” Wood responded honestly, stating that he had eaten and drunk nothing and was still unable to get out of bed.

The owner’s response was unexpected. He suggested sending another doctor and making arrangements to help Wood recover quickly. This was followed by an offer that left Wood amused. The owner proposed sending a private plane to collect Wood for the match and then return him to his bedside after the game.

“Next day, it’s the owner again, ‘How are you feeling?’ and I said, ‘Honestly, I’m still not good’. He then said, ‘I’ll send a private plane, you get in the plane, play the game. Then I’ll get the plane straight back out and get you back to your bedside.’”

Choosing Health Over the IPL

Wood admitted that he considered the approach, highlighting the immense pressure that comes with the IPL. He even discussed the situation with his father before deciding to prioritize his health over returning to the field.

He ultimately chose to focus on his recovery, which is no surprise given the challenges he has faced throughout his career. Injuries have been a recurring issue for the 36-year-old, limiting his participation in T20 leagues. His time in the IPL has been brief, with appearances for the Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023.

During the 2023 season, Wood performed well, taking 11 wickets in just four matches before being forced out due to an elbow injury. While he did not mention the specific franchise or owner involved, the incident has become one of the more peculiar stories from the IPL.

The Pressure on Bowlers in the IPL

This experience underscores the unique pressures and expectations that bowlers face during the IPL. The competition is known for its high stakes and intense schedule, often leading to unusual decisions and situations. Wood’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of health and well-being, even in the face of immense pressure.
