“You’ve Got to”: Experts Name Wallabies Backline for First Test

Wallabies Selection: A Bold Move for the Nations Championship

Tim Horan has made a notable decision in selecting Kalani Thomas as a backline bolter for the opening Nations Championship Test against Ireland on July 4 in Sydney. This choice stands out as it contrasts with the selections made by other rugby experts, highlighting the diversity of opinions within the sport.

Expert Opinions Vary

Stan Sport’s other Rugby Heaven experts—Justin Harrison, Cameron Shepherd, and Michael Atkinson—opted for ACT Brumbies captain Ryan Lonergan in the No.9 jersey. This selection reflects a preference for experience and leadership, particularly during Joe Schmidt’s tenure. However, the Waratahs are currently struggling for form, and Tate McDermott remains sidelined due to injury.

Thomas, a 24-year-old from the Queensland Reds, made his Wallabies debut against France in November. His recent performances have been impressive, leading Horan to believe that Thomas is the right choice for the upcoming matches. “I’ve gone Kalani Thomas. I think his form the last three or four weeks has been great,” said Horan, emphasizing the importance of finding a long-term solution at the 10 jersey.

Strategic Decisions

Horan also mentioned that he has Carter Gordon as a potential 10 for the next two or three years. “I know what he can produce. I don’t think he’s at his best yet,” he added. Gordon has been named on Queensland’s bench for the upcoming clash with the Chiefs after recovering from a minor knee injury.

Despite the challenges, Horan and Shepherd have decided to stick with Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii at outside centre, even though he has been sidelined for a long time and hasn’t made a significant impact in Super Rugby Pacific this season. “I think he’s wonderful, he’s a star player in a gold jersey,” Horan said, indicating his belief in Suaalii’s potential.

Winger Selections and Controversies

Horan has chosen Dylan Pietsch and Max Jorgensen as his starting wingers but has also highlighted Zac Lomax as a potential replacement if needed. “If there’s an injury to Pietsch or Jorgensen, I’d throw Zac Lomax in,” Horan said. He expressed confidence in Lomax’s abilities, stating, “I’ve seen enough of him. I like what I’ve seen of Zac. He’s got a long way to go, but mate, you’ve got to have him in that environment.”

Justin Harrison made a controversial pick by choosing versatile Reds veteran Filipo Daugunu over Suaalii at No.13. “Let’s call it a controversial pick. You’ve got to find a way to get him in the team,” Harrison explained. He also emphasized the importance of keeping Jorgensen and Pietsch in the team to prevent them from signing overseas contracts.

Coaching Changes and Future Plans

Joe Schmidt will coach the Wallabies against Ireland, France, and Italy in home Tests in July before handing the reins to Les Kiss. “I’m hearing Les Kiss will come in and have a bit of an influence over maybe the second Test match against France in Brisbane, definitely the third Test match,” Horan said. He noted that Kiss may have an impact on both selection and game planning post those three Test matches.

This strategic approach highlights the evolving nature of rugby in Australia and the importance of balancing experience with emerging talent. As the Nations Championship approaches, all eyes will be on the Wallabies’ performance and how these selections translate into results on the field.
