Adem Yze’s Strategic Moves Amid Injury Challenges
Richmond coach Adem Yze has been exploring new strategies to keep the team competitive despite a series of injuries that have affected their performance. One of the key moves in this strategy is the continued use of Noah Balta as a forward-ruck, a role that Yze believes could form a strong partnership with Toby Nankervis once the captain returns from injury.
Nankervis, who is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury, will miss his seventh consecutive AFL game when the Tigers face Adelaide at the MCG. His absence has placed additional pressure on the team, especially considering the current state of the squad. Richmond, which had an 1-7 record, managed to break their winless streak last week with a victory against West Coast in Perth.

Despite the challenges, there have been positive developments. Balta’s transition into the ruck has proven beneficial, starting with a standout performance against Melbourne’s captain, Max Gawn, a fortnight ago. Yze expressed excitement about the potential for growth in Balta’s role and how it could complement Nankervis when he returns.
“We’ve thrown his magnet around over the last couple of years, but out of necessity while Nank’s out we might have found something,” Yze said. “He’s been itching to help our team, not only to get a win but just to get our boys’ spirit and fight back.”
The coach highlighted that against Gawn and Melbourne’s strong midfield, the team was initially struggling, but Balta’s efforts helped improve their performance. Yze is optimistic about the future of this combination.
Injuries Continue to Impact the Team
While Balta’s performance is a bright spot, the team is still dealing with several injuries. Nankervis is expected to be out for another three weeks, and other players are also facing challenges. Tim Taranto, who suffered a concussion, will return to bolster the midfield against Adelaide. However, veteran midfielder Dion Prestia is sidelined again due to a calf injury, and young star Sam Lalor will miss at least two months due to an Achilles issue.
Yze is also monitoring the progress of first-year midfielder Sam Cumming, who is dealing with a shoulder concern. The coach emphasized that the team will not take any unnecessary risks with Cumming’s health.
“At no stage are we going to put him at risk,” Yze said. “He went through a strengthening program over four weeks and his last couple of weeks have been terrific for us. We’re going to back our performance staff’s call on this.”
Supporting Nathan Broad’s Future Plans
In addition to the current challenges, Yze also spoke about the future of Nathan Broad, a three-time premiership defender. Broad, who is 33, is set to become an unrestricted free agent this year, and whether he continues his career into 2027 remains uncertain.
“If it gets to a point where he feels like it’s time for his family to move then we’ll obviously support him through that,” Yze said. “He’s a required player for us and we’d love him to keep playing.”
This statement reflects the club’s commitment to supporting its players both on and off the field, even as they navigate the complexities of their careers.
