A Heartfelt Mother’s Day Moment on Sunrise
Natalie Barr, the popular host of Sunrise, found herself overwhelmed with emotion during a special live segment that touched on a deeply personal topic. The moment, which took place during a Mother’s Day celebration, brought her to tears as she shared a heartfelt conversation with her mother, Julie.
The segment featured Natalie and her mother discussing the challenges of motherhood, a subject that quickly became more emotional than expected. Natalie, who is the mother of two sons, Lachlan, 23, and Hunter, 19, with her husband Andrew Thompson, opened up about the difficulties of watching her children grow up and move out of the family home.
When Natalie asked her mother what she thought was the hardest part of being a mother, Julie’s response struck a chord. “I think it’s when everybody grows up and moves away, as you’re finding out now,” she said. The answer left Natalie visibly shaken, and she struggled to hold back her tears. “Yeah, I don’t think many people talk about when they move away,” she replied, clearly moved by the sentiment.
Co-host Matt Shirvington was also visibly affected by the segment. As the conversation wrapped up in the studio, he expressed his emotions, saying, “Wow. If we weren’t crying before, we’re crying now. Love you mum.” His words resonated with the audience, highlighting the universal nature of the experience.
Fans of Natalie were quick to respond online, sharing their admiration for the emotional moment. One person wrote, “Awwwwww Nat! You’re so gorgeous. And a beautiful mother, I have no doubt.” Another simply commented, “Awww Nat you made me cry.”
This wasn’t the first time Natalie has spoken openly about the challenges of her children leaving home. In an interview with Who magazine in 2024, she admitted to feeling a sense of loss after both boys moved out. She described how she would often mope around the house and indulge in too much chocolate during those early months. However, she has since found a better balance, even taking up Pilates to help her cope with the changes.
Natalie now feels more at peace with the new chapter of her life. “It’s not so bad coming home to an empty house now,” she said, reflecting on how she has learned to adjust to the changes.
The emotional segment highlighted the deep bond between a mother and her children, and the bittersweet nature of watching them grow up. It also served as a reminder of the importance of cherishing these moments, even as they pass us by.
