Why is Kira Puru moving from music to acting in Bad Company?

A New Chapter for Kira Puru

Kira Puru, a Melbourne-based Māori singer-songwriter, has always been known for their unique blend of 00s nostalgia and soul-baring lyrics. Their 2023 single “All My Boyfriends” was a testament to their artistic evolution, featuring an irresistible hook and heartfelt storytelling. This track marked a significant milestone in their career, following years of success including a number-one hit on the triple j chart and a spot on the Hottest 100.

Despite these achievements, Puru took a break from music after the release of “All My Boyfriends,” stepping away from both recording and live performances. Instead, they focused on other creative pursuits such as photography, graphic design, and creative direction. This period of introspection and exploration led them to a new path in the entertainment industry.

Embracing Acting

This year, Puru made a surprising return to the spotlight, not through music but by appearing in two comedy series. Their first role was in the dark comedy crime mystery “Deadloch,” followed by a part in the new arts industry satire “Bad Company.” In “Bad Company,” Puru plays Kat, the first point of contact at a struggling theatre run by a nepotistic and spendthrift artistic director named Margie.

The show follows Kat and the rest of the theatre crew as they navigate the challenges of working with a new chief executive, Julia, who is tasked with saving the institution from financial ruin. Puru’s portrayal of Kat brings an understated humor that feels expertly crafted, especially considering it’s only their second acting gig.

The Transition from Music to Acting

Puru’s transition from music to acting was not planned. They mentioned that they’ve always had a theatrical side, influenced by their early experiences in acting during their teenage years. However, they hadn’t pursued it seriously until recently.

“I’ve always been a bit of a theatrical person — probably to the dismay of my parents, I imagine,” Puru said. “I did a little bit of acting when I was a teenager. Without giving my full age away, it’s been a pretty long break between then and now.”

Acting doesn’t feel totally foreign to Puru’s experience as a musician. They noted that making music videos and performing on stage involves a lot of performance and acting elements. However, the shift to acting required a different set of skills and a new approach to creativity.

The Unexpected Journey

Puru’s journey into acting began with an audition for “Deadloch,” which they were initially nervous about. “I got an audition request for Deadloch — I indirectly know the Kates [series creators Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney] and I’ve been a massive fan for a long time.”

They recalled a moment where they had tweeted at the creators, “Please put me in something,” before deleting their Twitter. “So, that role could just have been manifestation, to a degree.”

Despite initial nerves, Puru found the experience rewarding. “I was humbled pretty immediately after arriving on set. But I feel so lucky to be involved, and everyone was very kind and patient.”

New Projects and Future Plans

Puru also appeared in “Bad Company,” which came about through a different audition process. “The audition was actually for a different production that had something to do with the queen. I didn’t get that part, but somebody passed my [tape] along to the [Bad Company] casting agent … that might have been the way it went.”

Looking ahead, Puru is exploring new creative avenues. They mentioned that they’re working on a television show with a friend and are open to more acting opportunities. “I did my third ever audition in the last couple weeks, so hopefully I’ll get a call back.”

While they’re enjoying the new experiences, Puru is also contemplating a return to music. “There’s new music being made. And I’ve got a lot of fun little projects with friends … I would love to be releasing music again soon, but I’m waiting for a sign from the universe, basically.”

Conclusion

Kira Puru’s journey from musician to actor highlights their versatility and willingness to explore new creative paths. While they may not be releasing new music anytime soon, their recent roles in “Deadloch” and “Bad Company” showcase their talent and potential in the world of acting. As they continue to experiment with different forms of art, fans can look forward to seeing what Puru will do next.
