Scotland marks first capybara birth in 20 years

A New Arrival at Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo, operated by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, has recently welcomed the birth of a capybara, marking the first time in 18 years that such an adorable creature has been born in Scotland. This event has generated excitement among visitors and staff alike, as the new arrival is already capturing the hearts of many.

Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity are closely monitoring the baby capybara, known affectionately as a ‘babybara’. At this early stage, the pup is still quite vulnerable, and the team is ensuring that it receives the best care possible during this critical period of development.

Capybara pups typically weigh between 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms at birth, which is roughly equivalent to the weight of a six-pack of Irn-Bru. As the weeks go by, the pup will gradually become more independent and begin to spend more time grazing. It will also start learning essential social behaviours from the herd, including communication sounds like barks and chirps, as well as understanding group hierarchy.

Jonny Appleyard, an animal keeper at the zoo, shared his excitement about the new arrival: “We are so proud of Luna and Rodney, they’re already doing an incredible job of looking after their new baby. They are such a beautiful species, and the babies are especially adorable!”

The baby is slowly becoming braver and exploring its surroundings, so visitors may have the chance to catch a glimpse of them, always closely followed by their mother. Capybara pups grow up quickly, so the zoo recommends visiting soon if you want to see the new arrival at their cutest stage.

In the coming weeks, the youngster will undergo its first health check, during which the keepers will determine its gender and choose a name for the pup. Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents, capable of weighing up to 80 kilograms and measuring up to 1.7 metres in length. These fascinating creatures are native to South America and are known for their friendly and social nature.

Recent Events Involving Capybaras

In March, there was a significant search for a capybara that had escaped from a zoo. The giant rodent, named Samba, managed to burst out of her temporary enclosure just a day after being transferred to Marwell Zoo in Hampshire. Her cellmate, Tango, joined her in the escape but was quickly recovered from the bushes near the zoo.

Samba, however, remains missing after escaping on March 16. A possible sighting was reported near a pub in the neighboring village of Owslebury, but no confirmed location has been found yet.

As the zoo continues to monitor the new capybara pup, the community remains engaged and interested in the welfare of these unique animals. With ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all the zoo’s residents, the arrival of this new capybara is a heartwarming addition to the Edinburgh Zoo family.
