Unsung Aussie’s $5.5m LIV rise and fall

Lucas Herbert’s Historic Win at LIV Golf Virginia

Lucas Herbert, an Australian golfer, made history by securing a wire-to-wire victory at the LIV Golf Virginia event. He closed with a 3-under 69 to clinch a four-shot win over Sergio Garcia at Trump National. This marks Herbert’s first LIV Golf victory and a significant milestone in his career.

The win not only brought Herbert a substantial prize of approximately $5.5 million but also propelled him up to No.3 on the points list. Additionally, it earned him a spot at the US Open in June, which will be his first appearance in three years.

“my first major ever was at Shinnecock (in 2018),” Herbert said. “Nice to go back and see what I’ve learned since then. Can’t wait to get there and try to play like I did this week.”

With LIV Golf players now eligible for world ranking points, Herbert’s performance saw him jump from No.173 to No.89 in the rankings. This achievement is particularly notable as every member of the all-Australian Ripper GC team has now won an individual event on the LIV Tour. His teammates—Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, and Elvis Smylie—joined him in celebration, spraying champagne on the green after the final round.

Herbert’s victory came amid uncertainty about the future of LIV Golf, as Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund is set to pull its funding at the end of the season. Despite this, Herbert managed to secure his place in the winner’s list, highlighting his resilience and determination.

This win marked Herbert’s seventh professional victory and his first in over a year. Throughout the tournament, he battled illness, yet he managed to hold off Garcia in the final round.

“I can perform pretty damn well when things aren’t perfect,” Herbert said. “I was pretty sick all week, I woke up this morning probably feeling worse than I had the last few days. I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone tonight.”

The event also saw President Donald Trump attending the final round for the second consecutive week. Last week, Cameron Young won at Trump National Doral in Miami. This week, Garcia finished as the runner-up with a score of 70, while Bryson DeChambeau secured third place with a 66 in the final round.

Anthony Kim, who previously won in Australia earlier this year, shot a 62 that helped his 4Aces team reach a playoff. They eventually won the team title against the Fireballs.

Herbert started the tournament with scores of 64 and 63, building an eight-shot lead. Although there were some tense moments, he ultimately coasted to victory, marking his first win in his third season on the LIV Golf Tour.
