A Legacy of Loyalty
Junior Paulo has made it clear that his heart belongs to Parramatta, and he doesn’t see himself playing for any other team in the National Rugby League (NRL). Despite being 32 years old, Paulo continues to show the same determination and passion that have defined his career. His recent performance in the Eels’ thrilling 33-30 victory over North Queensland was a testament to his enduring commitment.
In the 79th minute, Paulo managed to get a finger on Jake Clifford’s field goal attempt, sending the ball into the post and forcing the game into golden point. This moment highlighted his ability to make crucial contributions even in high-pressure situations. Paulo has also taken steps to stay competitive by slimming down during the off-season, ensuring he can keep up with the demands of modern rugby league.
Staying True to His Roots
Paulo has been a consistent presence for Jason Ryles’ side this season, and his leadership on and off the field is invaluable. As the Eels prepare to face Melbourne in the Magic Round on Saturday, Paulo’s experience and dedication are key assets for the team.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Paulo could potentially be a target for new franchises like the Perth Bears, who will enter the NRL next season, and the PNG Chiefs the following year. However, Paulo has no interest in moving away from Parramatta.
“I’m hoping to stay but that’s something that’s out of my hands,” Paulo said. “My manager will look after it with the club and I’m sure they’ll be in conversations sometime soon. This is home for me and this is exactly where I want to be.”
A Commitment to Excellence
Paulo’s focus remains on performing at his best and contributing to the team’s success. He believes that if he continues to play well, he will have the opportunity to extend his career with the Eels.
“I feel if I’m still playing good enough footy and hopefully I get to keep on playing,” he added. “I enjoy where I’m at and for me that’s trying to play some good footy and get back to the footy team that we know we’re capable of being.”
Building a Winning Culture
Over the past 18 months, Paulo has been one of the few constants under Ryles’ leadership. The coach has overseen significant changes to the roster, focusing on developing young talent and building a stronger foundation for the future.

Despite the Eels finishing the previous season without making the finals and currently sitting 14th on the table ahead of their match against the Storm, Paulo sees positive signs of progress. He believes that Ryles and the coaching staff are doing an excellent job in nurturing the next generation of players.
“I think it (the club) is in a great position, you look from top to bottom and see the progression of our juniors that have been coming through,” Paulo said. “Rylesy and all the other staff have been doing a good job in developing these guys and making them ready for first grade.”
A Vision for the Future
Paulo emphasized the importance of creating a culture where young players can thrive and eventually reach the NRL. He pointed out the difference between simply playing in the league and being a true NRL player.
“We’re trying to create a culture here where we’re able to develop these guys and see them in the NRL soon,” he said. “It’s about more than just winning games; it’s about building a sustainable and successful team for the future.”
