Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Dominance in IPL 2026
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the 36-year-old fast bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has been a standout performer in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. In a recent match against Mumbai Indians (MI), he delivered an exceptional performance, taking 4 wickets for just 23 runs in four overs. This achievement has placed him at the top of the Purple Cap competition, with a total of 21 wickets from 11 matches. Over the course of 43 overs, he has conceded 321 runs, maintaining an economy rate of 7.46.
His success on the field has been attributed to his consistent efforts and hard work, rather than luck. He has consistently performed well in most of RCB’s games, but one of his most memorable performances came when he took 3 wickets for 5 runs against Delhi Capitals (DC) in a match held in Delhi.
While young talents like Prince Yadav and Anshul Kamboj have also made their mark this season, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has emerged as the primary success story of IPL 2026. Although many believe that the younger players have done enough to earn a spot in the Indian team, Bhuvi’s recent performances suggest that he still has a lot to offer, regardless of the format. His last appearance for India was in November 2022.
Prince Yadav has taken 16 wickets in 11 matches, with an economy rate of 8.17, while Anshul Kamboj has claimed 19 wickets at an economy rate of 9.20. These statistics challenge the argument that the younger players should be prioritized over Bhuvi, who has maintained a strong record since leaving the national team.
Consistent Performance Across Seasons
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s best performance came during the 2023 season with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where he took 16 wickets in 14 matches, including a five-wicket haul. The following season, he played 14 matches for SRH again, claiming 11 wickets at an economy rate of 9.35. Last year, during RCB’s first-ever IPL title win, he played a crucial role by taking 17 wickets in 14 matches.
This season, he has shown his ability to perform across all three phases of a cricket match. During the powerplay, he has taken 12 wickets in 12 overs, maintaining an economy rate of 7 and achieving a dot-ball percentage of 51.4%. In the middle overs, he has bowled seven overs, conceding 59 runs and taking two wickets.
At the death, he has allowed 94 runs in 72 balls while taking seven wickets across nine matches. His versatility makes him a valuable asset in any phase of the game.
Potential Return to the Indian Team
India’s T20I team recently won the World Cup, creating a temporary gap in their player roster. With Jasprit Bumrah unable to participate in all upcoming matches, Bhuvneshwar Kumar could serve as an experienced replacement. His ODI testing is scheduled to take place during the Afghanistan series in June.
The 50-over World Cup is only a year away, and there are several T20I matches lined up for the Indian team. They will face Ireland in late June, followed by five T20I matches against England in July. Later in the year, they will play T20I matches in Zimbabwe, followed by series against West Indies in October and Sri Lanka in December.
Evaluating Selection Decisions
The question now is whether the selectors are ready to give Bhuvi another opportunity. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar will need to review RP Singh’s observations from his nationwide travels to make informed decisions about the selection process.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar continues to hold value for the Indian team due to their demanding schedule and the need for players who can take wickets and maintain fitness. While the selectors have the final say, his consistent performances suggest that he deserves another chance to represent the country.
