Matthew Hayden’s Insights on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Rajasthan Royals’ Chase
Matthew Hayden provided some valuable insights into the performance of Rajasthan Royals’ young talent, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, following the team’s defeat against Gujarat Titans in a high-stakes match of IPL 2026. The game took place at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on 9 May, where Gujarat Titans delivered an outstanding all-round performance, scoring a massive total of 229/4. In response, Rajasthan Royals were bowled out for 152 runs.
Hayden highlighted the importance of longer batting innings when chasing large targets, especially in high-scoring matches. He pointed out that while Sooryavanshi showed promise with a strike rate of 300, scoring 30 runs, he needs to extend his stay at the crease to be more effective in such scenarios.
The Strength of Gujarat Titans’ Top Order
During the post-match press conference, Hayden praised the consistency of Gujarat Titans’ top-order batters. He emphasized that the ability to bat for extended periods is crucial for success in high-pressure situations.
“Tonight was a good example of an exciting young talent in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He batted, got 30 runs at a strike rate of 300. But when you’re chasing 220 odd, you need to bat longer and deeper. So the advantage that we have is that we get players, like the top three that you mentioned, who are striking at 150. Let me tell you as a batter, that is really hard, and they’re doing it for a long period of time, they’re constantly getting into the back half of the game, not just batting inside the powerplay,” Hayden remarked.
A Strong Start from Gujarat Titans’ Openers
Gujarat Titans were invited to bat first by Rajasthan Royals, and they made the most of the opportunity. The openers, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, provided a sensational start, scoring 118 runs in just 11 overs for the opening wicket. Both batters showcased their form with half-centuries, maintaining a rapid run rate throughout the powerplay and middle-overs.
Despite Jos Buttler’s modest contribution of 13 runs off 10 deliveries, Gujarat Titans managed to post a formidable total of 229/4 in the allocated 20 overs. This performance underscored the team’s strategic approach to batting.
Constructing Innings: The GT Strategy
Hayden commended Gujarat Titans for their methodical approach to building innings rather than relying on short bursts of aggression. He noted that the team’s fitness and ability to play Test match-type cricket, particularly in ODIs, are key strengths.
“I love the fact that we’re going about constructing in innings. Tonight, where we’re setting a target, which is a different challenge for us, we’ve had a number of totals in that sort of 160 range. Which I would back our batting to get through any day of the week, so it was nice tonight to have that bit of a challenge against an X factor team like Rajasthan Royals, and to come out on top was really important for us,” Hayden added.
Sooryavanshi’s Impact in the Chase
In the chase, Rajasthan Royals needed a strong performance from their batsmen, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered. He smashed 36 runs off 16 deliveries, taking the attack to the Gujarat Titans’ bowlers. However, after his dismissal, the run rate dropped significantly, and the rest of the batters failed to respond effectively, leading to Rajasthan Royals being all out for 152.
Despite the loss, Sooryavanshi has had an impressive IPL 2026 campaign, accumulating 440 runs from 11 innings at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 236.56.
Gujarat Titans’ Dominance in the Tournament
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans’ top three batters have been instrumental in their success this season. Shubman Gill has scored an impressive 462 runs from 10 innings, while Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler have contributed 440 and 348 runs respectively. Their consistent performances have been a major factor in the team’s strong position in the tournament.
