“Means a lot to me”: Inglis emotional tribute to Bellamy

Emotional Tribute from Greg Inglis to Craig Bellamy

Greg Inglis, a revered figure in the National Rugby League (NRL), has expressed deep emotions in paying tribute to his former coach, Craig Bellamy. Inglis emphasized that much of his successful career can be attributed to the guidance and support he received from Bellamy, who has been a significant mentor in his life.

The Melbourne Storm recently disclosed that Bellamy, aged 66, has been diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disorder. Although the specific condition remains undisclosed, the rugby league community has shown immense support for the esteemed coach.

Inglis, who was recruited by the Storm at the age of 14, made his NRL debut for the club in 2005. His career has since flourished, marked by grand final victories with Melbourne (premierships later stripped) and South Sydney. He also became a standout representative player for both Queensland and Australia before retiring in 2021.

During an appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy panel, Inglis became emotional when discussing Bellamy’s health diagnosis. After a moment of reflection, he shared heartfelt words about the impact Bellamy has had on his life.

“He means a lot to me, to be honest,” Inglis said. “He gave me faith, he gave me my debut jersey. He gave me, I guess, a point of a life I could have in rugby league. It’s obviously pretty hard to hear that news. But he has all the support, he has all the love out there, not only in the rugby league community but in the entire community around him.”

Inglis, now 39, acknowledged that while he might have found success in rugby league regardless, the structure provided by Bellamy and the Storm played a crucial role in his achievements.

“I think I would have made my way somewhere around rugby league,” he said. “But I don’t think if I wasn’t in that structure, that I would have had the career that I had. So I’ve got to thank Melbourne and Craig for that.”

After initially avoiding media attention following the announcement, Bellamy finally addressed his health diagnosis over the weekend. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans and the wider community.

The Storm have assured that Bellamy will continue in his role for the foreseeable future. With a contract that extends for two more seasons after this one, the club remains committed to supporting their legendary coach.
