A New Chapter for Jack Bostock
Jack Bostock’s journey from injury to recovery has been nothing short of inspiring. The Dolphins’ breakout star has found a new lease of life after a phone call from master coach Wayne Bennett, who played a pivotal role in helping him regain his confidence and focus. However, Bostock is not looking to return the favor when it comes to their upcoming clash at the Magic Round.
Since making a triumphant return from a ruptured ACL that he suffered last year, Bostock has been a revelation on the field. His form has raised significant questions about how the Dolphins will manage their squad, as they now face a challenging decision regarding his future with the team.
Bostock’s opportunity to play in his preferred centre position came after Jake Averillo suffered a severe hand injury. Since then, he has made an immediate impact, scoring three tries and accumulating 186 running metres per game in two matches—both wins against the Melbourne Storm and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

From Rookie of the Year to Injury Setback
At just 22 years old, Bostock had already become a formidable player on the wing. He finished the 2024 season as the Dally M Rookie of the Year, scoring nine tries in 14 games. However, his career took a dramatic turn when he sustained damage to his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in round 16 against Newcastle in Perth.
“I was obviously heartbroken at the start,” Bostock said. “I cried like a little girl when I found out I’d done my ACL in the sheds. But after that, you just have to move on with life.”
He emphasized that there was more to life than rugby league, and he needed to focus on other aspects of his life while undergoing rehabilitation.
The Influence of Wayne Bennett
It was a call from Wayne Bennett, the man who gave him his NRL debut at the Dolphins, that helped Bostock move past his initial despair. Bennett’s advice focused on life outside of football, encouraging Bostock to not dwell too much on his knee injury.
“He was just talking about life, really—getting on with life outside footy and to not be dwelling on my knee too much,” Bostock recalled. “It’ll take over your life and eat you away, so worry about other things that you can control.”
Bostock returned home to Shellharbour in NSW’s Illawarra region, where he watched family and friends play sports and even took on a bit of a laborer role, renovating a house. This time away allowed him to accept the situation and gain a new perspective.
A Stronger Return
Bostock used his time away from the field to gain some extra kilos, aiming to transition from the wing to the centres. His efforts paid off almost immediately upon his return, as he scored a double in a match with Redcliffe, which was attended by teammate Kodi Nikorima.
The Dolphins’ Magic Round clash with the Rabbitohs on Friday night will be Bostock’s first chance to face Bennett. If Latrell Mitchell recovers from a back injury, he could be another challenge for Bostock, as the New South Wales player has been in excellent form this year.
“Latrell’s been on fire this year, so it’ll be a good challenge for me and a good task to see how I’m up to with the top centres in the league,” Bostock said.
Impact on the Dolphins’ Roster
Bostock’s emergence as a quality centre has significant implications for the Dolphins’ roster management. He has become a serious aerial threat, providing halves Isaiya Katoa and Kodi Nikorima with a kick contest option that was previously reserved for fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.
Averillo will need to work hard to reclaim his centre spot upon his return, despite his own impressive form. He has also played at five-eighth in the past, and current No.6 Nikorima is still uncertain about his future with the team.
Nikorima praised Bostock’s impact on the team, calling him a “blessing” and highlighting his energy and ability to lock down the centre spot. He noted that Bostock looked stronger and more confident, adding that his youth and potential for growth make him a daunting prospect.
“You can see on his face he’s happy at the moment,” Nikorima said.
As Bostock continues to thrive in his new position, the Dolphins will need to carefully consider how to best utilize his talents while managing their squad effectively.
