Premier League Table Unveiled: Who Will Dominate the Title Race?

The Controversy Surrounding VAR in the Premier League

No subject divides opinion in football quite like Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The past 24 hours have seen this controversial technology at the center of Premier League discussions, following a pivotal moment in West Ham’s match against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The relegation-threatened Hammers believed they had equalized in the dying moments of their crucial clash at the London Stadium when Callum Wilson’s low-driven strike crossed the line during a physical corner kick. However, an infringement on Gunners goalkeeper David Raya was detected by the video technology, leading to the goal being disallowed. This decision sparked outrage among West Ham’s manager, Nuno Espirito Santo.

This ruling could have significant implications for both the Premier League title race and the relegation battle. With Arsenal currently five points ahead of chasing Manchester City and only two games left, the outcome might shift dramatically without VAR. Meanwhile, West Ham remains in the dreaded drop zone.

Statistical Insights into a VAR-Free Premier League

New data has revealed how the Premier League table would look if the much-maligned VAR system were not in place. According to AceOdds, Mikel Arteta’s side would be on five fewer points, meaning they would still be top of the table but with just a one-point lead over Manchester City, who would have a game in hand.

Manchester United would remain in third position with 65 points, while Brighton and Bournemouth would secure Champions League spots with 60 points each. Liverpool, however, would experience a dramatic fall, dropping to seventh place with 59 points, below Aston Villa on 60 points.

Chelsea, struggling through a difficult season, would be worse off without VAR, finishing in 10th place with 47 points. However, there would be no changes to the bottom three teams, with Wolves in 20th, Burnley in 19th, and West Ham in 18th.

Tottenham, on the other hand, would be five points clear of the drop zone with 41 points, but currently sit just one point above the bottom three with 37 points.

West Ham’s Possible Complaint Against PGMOL

West Ham is reportedly considering filing an official complaint with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) regarding the disallowed goal. Sources indicate that the club is in the process of deciding whether it is worth pursuing this complaint. However, some insiders have suggested that the entire complaints process may be “pointless.”

The refereeing body, led by Howard Webb, is believed to think that VAR Darren England and on-field referee Chris Kavanagh made the correct call during the high-pressure moment. The decision took four minutes and 17 seconds to reach.

Inconsistencies in VAR Decisions

Some frustration stems from the inconsistencies in VAR decisions throughout the 2025-26 season. Similar situations have gone unpunished in other matches. For instance, Chelsea were denied a penalty away at Arsenal in March despite Raya hitting Joao Pedro with two hands while the striker was also being wrestled to the ground. Arteta’s team won that match 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
