“I made the right choice”: Jacob Bethell addresses IPL journey amid Cook vs Pietersen clash

A Rising Star in the IPL

Jacob Bethell, a young English batter, has been making waves in the early stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The 22-year-old was initially left out of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lineup for the first few games of the season. However, an injury to Phil Salt created an opportunity for Bethell to step into the team.

This move sparked a debate among former England players, with Alastair Cook suggesting that Bethell should return to England to play county cricket. In response, Kevin Pietersen took to his social media platform and expressed his disagreement, stating that Cook had no idea what it was like to be in the IPL and that his opinion on Bethell was irrelevant.

Bethell’s Perspective

As RCB prepares to face the Mumbai Indians on Sunday evening, Bethell was asked about the ongoing discussion between former England batting greats. He expressed his belief that he made the right decision by staying in the IPL. Bethell emphasized that the tournament is a marquee event featuring the best players in the world.

He also highlighted the importance of the experience gained from playing in the IPL for his career development. While acknowledging that former players have the right to their opinions, Bethell stated that he is happy with his decision to stay with the franchise.

Opportunity to Open with Virat Kohli

After replacing another English batter in the team, Bethell had the chance to open the batting alongside Virat Kohli. Despite playing four games this season, he has scored just 43 runs, with a top score of 20 against the Delhi Capitals.

In his media interactions ahead of the RCB vs MI clash, Bethell reiterated his belief that the IPL experiences will help improve his career. He also mentioned that the franchise is the right place for him to be.

Chance for Defending Champions

Rajat Patidar’s team currently sits in fourth place on the table with 12 points and still has four games remaining. The upcoming match against the former five-time winners on Sunday at Raipur will be their 11th game of the season. A victory could see them climb to the top of the table due to their better run rate.

In their previous encounter, the IPL 2025 winners defeated their opponents by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. However, in their last game, RCB suffered a nine-run loss to Lucknow.

A New Venue for Excitement

Raipur, which has not hosted an IPL match for ten years, will witness the return of stars like Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the league approaches its conclusion. This game promises to be an exciting affair, with both teams vying for crucial points in the standings.
