Shane Watson, the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2026, has found himself in the spotlight due to recent developments regarding his departure from the PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators. During a YouTube show with Fawad Alam, Omar revealed that there was a disagreement between the management and Watson when Rutherford temporarily left the squad due to personal reasons. Rutherford returned to the team two days later, but this did not go smoothly with Watson.
Omar explained that Watson raised concerns about Rutherford’s commitment, questioning whether there was any guarantee that he would play for the team now that he had left. According to Omar, Watson treated the situation as a disciplinary issue and refused to include Rutherford in the playing XI, despite the team needing batting strength heading into the playoffs.

Omar added that Watson wanted to establish a strict team culture, which he felt would not align with the team’s environment. He emphasized that such an approach could be detrimental to the team’s dynamics. As a result, Watson was not selected for the upcoming season.

Watson enjoyed a successful playing career in the T20 circuit, participating in 145 IPL matches where he scored 3874 runs and took 92 wickets. He also played for the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL from 2015 to 2021, contributing 677 runs for the franchise.
