A Family Affair: Margaret Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Support Grandson at Basketball Game
Margaret Trudeau, the 77-year-old activist and mother of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, made a notable appearance at a basketball game on Tuesday evening. She was seen cheering alongside her ex-daughter-in-law, Sophie Gregoire, as they supported their grandson, Xavier Trudeau, during a halftime performance.
Xavier, who is 18 years old, has been making waves in the music industry under the name Xav. He launched his career in February 2025 with the release of his debut single, “Til the Nights Done.” The event marked a special moment for the family, as both Margaret and Sophie were present to cheer on their young relative.
While Justin Trudeau was not in attendance during the actual game, he did make a brief appearance during the soundcheck the day before. In a video shared on Xav’s social media, Trudeau expressed his pride as a father, calling himself a “proud dad.”
Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire were married for 18 years before their separation in 2023. The couple shares three children, including Xavier, 17-year-old daughter Ella-Grace, and 12-year-old son Hadrien. Despite the divorce, it seems that family bonds remain strong.
Justin Trudeau’s current girlfriend, popstar Katy Perry, has a daughter named Daisy, who is five years old. She previously dated actor Orlando Bloom, with whom she had a nine-year relationship. The couple ended their engagement and called it quits in June of last year.
Following their breakup, Trudeau and Perry were first romantically linked in July 2025. Xavier, who is still young, has appeared to give his father’s new relationship his approval. In an interview with content creator G Hobs, he described Perry as “cool” and “nice,” highlighting their shared interest in music.
Xavier mentioned that he had “talked for hours” with the 13-time Grammy nominee, particularly discussing his music. Perry offered him advice and next steps for his career, which he appreciated.
When asked if he and Perry ever talked about her trip, Hobs joked about “going to the moon.” Xavier replied, “We didn’t talk about that. Did she even go to the moon?” This lighthearted exchange showcased their comfortable rapport.
In February, Xavier also appeared on The Brandon Gomez Show podcast, where he discussed his passion for music. He explained that he has always loved music, whether creating or listening to it. His parents have been supportive of his career from the beginning.
“They’ve been supportive since the start,” he said. “Every single time I come back from the studio, I’d have something to show them, and we’d sit at dinner and just listen to it like, ‘Oh, I like this. I don’t like that.’”
He added, “They love it. They’re happy for me. They’re happy I’m choosing my own path in life.”

Xavier’s journey into the music industry has been closely followed by his family, who continue to support his creative endeavors. As he continues to build his career, it seems that the Trudeau family remains united in their encouragement and love for each other.

The family dynamic is a testament to the strong relationships that have been maintained despite changes in personal lives. With each member pursuing their own passions, the Trudeau family continues to be a source of inspiration and support for one another.
