Antigoni Buxton Advances to Eurovision 2026 Grand Final Amid Mixed Reactions
Antigoni Buxton, a star from the reality TV show Love Island, has successfully qualified for the Grand Final of Eurovision 2026. The 30-year-old Greek-English Cypriot performer captivated audiences with her song Jalla during the second semi-final of the prestigious song contest. Her performance secured Cyprus a spot among the top 10 countries advancing to Saturday’s final, alongside Albania, Australia, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Malta, Norway, Romania, and Ukraine.
Despite this achievement, some fans expressed disappointment with her performance online. Many criticized her vocals, with one user on X stating, “I’m sorry Cyprus but what the heck were these vocals?” Another fan, Patty, noted that while the song was perfect, the vocals were an obvious flaw. George highlighted vocal struggles and playback delays, adding to the negative feedback.
Another user, Devon, commented that the vocals were “a mess” and the stage energy lacked sufficient intensity. Similarly, Charlie said, “LOVED the Cyprus song but her vocals were lacking unfortunately.” Jamie called the performance a “trainwreck,” while Gabby described her vocals as “terrible.”
However, not all reactions were negative. Many fans praised the catchy nature of Jalla, with John writing on X, “Bravo young lady, great performance!” Elle added, “Yes Antigoni, smashed it.” Ellena called her “amazing,” and Edward wrote, “This song is so fun… I love it.”
A Dream Realized
Antigoni, who appeared in series eight of Love Island in 2022, shared her thoughts on competing in Eurovision with BBC Newsbeat. She mentioned that people shouldn’t be surprised by her participation, stating, “If anything, doing Love Island was random.” She revealed that her dream of becoming a singer has been with her since childhood, inspired by Helena Paparizou’s victory for Greece in 2005.
“Love Island was a great moment because it gave me the chance to introduce myself to a lot of people, and now I’m on that path I always wanted to be on,” she said.
