“Zero Sense”: Ex-CSK Star Criticizes Ruturaj Gaikwad Over Major Tactical Blunder in CSK’s LSG Defeat

A Disappointing Defeat for Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a significant setback in their bid for the IPL 2026 playoffs after a humiliating seven-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday. This marked LSG’s first win in three matches, and it has placed CSK under considerable pressure as they have only two games left in the league stage.

Despite putting up a target of 187/5 with the bat, CSK struggled to contain LSG, who chased the total comfortably with more than three overs to spare. The defeat not only affected CSK’s Net Run Rate but also pushed them further down the standings, making their path to the playoffs increasingly difficult.

Criticism from a Former Player

Former CSK batter S Badrinath took to social media to express his concerns about the team’s performance. He pointed fingers at the team’s captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, claiming that a “massive tactical error” was made even before the first ball was bowled.

Badrinath highlighted the decision to leave out spinner Akeal Hosein from the playing XI, especially considering the conditions in Lucknow were favorable for spin bowling. He posted on X:

“CSK losing because of team selection errors is becoming a pattern this season. Leaving out Akeal Hosein on this track made zero sense. Another game, another missed opportunity.”

He argued that the team failed to take advantage of the conditions and missed a crucial chance to climb up the points table, particularly since Punjab Kings XI (PBKS) had lost their match earlier in the day.

Mitchell Marsh Shines for LSG

LSG opener Mitchell Marsh delivered an outstanding innings, scoring 90 runs off just 38 balls. His aggressive batting dismantled the CSK attack and ultimately secured the victory for his team.

Gaikwad Remains Confident

Despite the defeat, Ruturaj Gaikwad remained composed and acknowledged the challenges faced by the team’s bowlers. However, he emphasized that there was still time to turn things around in the remaining matches.

Gaikwad stated:

“I felt there was a bit of something for the fast bowlers. You know, when we batted, we found it difficult to hit it off the hard lengths probably, their bowlers executed it really well. But I think we were looking at 160 or 170 and we ended up getting 180.”

He praised LSG’s batting performance and stressed the importance of quick improvements for the upcoming matches.

“Just make sure we come back and improve what are the areas we need to improve and yes, try and adapt and assess the conditions as quickly as possible.”

Staying in the Hunt

Although the five-time champions remain in the race for a playoff spot, the pressure is mounting. With no more room for mistakes, CSK will need to regroup and perform at their best in the final two games of the league stage. The challenge ahead is clear, and the team must act swiftly to secure their place in the playoffs.
