Holy Haumole: Manly Star Shines in Blues Trial

A Dominant Performance by Manly in 46-18 Victory Over Wests Tigers

Manly’s powerful forward, Haumole Olakau’atu, has made a strong case for a return to the NSW team as speedster Tolutau Koula also provided a timely reminder of his abilities in a commanding 46-18 victory over the Wests Tigers. The match, played at Suncorp Stadium, showcased the Sea Eagles’ dominance with a performance that was almost flawless.

Olakau’atu was in career-best form and proved to be a fearsome presence on the right edge, terrorizing the Tigers’ defense throughout the game. His performance was so impressive that it seems inevitable he will soon add to the two State of Origin matches he played in 2024.

Manly coach Kieran Foran praised Olakau’atu’s efforts, stating, “I don’t think he can do any more. Haumole has been outstanding the whole season and our near-best player each and every week.” He also highlighted the team’s strong start, saying, “I thought the guys set the game up in the first 20 minutes, physically. There was plenty of intent and they got the reward.”

Koula delivered a standout performance, beating five defenders in a 55m sprint to the tryline in the fourth minute. His display was a true Blues audition, and even if he doesn’t start at center, he would be a valuable bench option given his versatility across the outside backs.

The Sea Eagles have climbed into fourth place after starting the season winless in their first three matches under former coach Anthony Seibold. This victory marks a significant turnaround for the team.

Meanwhile, the undermanned Tigers suffered their third consecutive heavy defeat. Centre Taylan May aggravated a previous shoulder injury and had to leave the field in the 73rd minute. Coach Marshall expressed concern, stating, “It’s not good. I think it dislocated. He has to get a scan, but it could be his season. When you dislocate your shoulder and come back and rehab it – usually if you do it again there’s a fair chance you’re going to have surgery.”

Manly winger Lehi Hopoate had an unpredictable afternoon. He was reported in the 16th minute for pushing referee Grant Atkins over while chasing a bomb. Just nine seconds later, he became the first Sea Eagle since Brett Stewart in 2006 to score a try in seven consecutive matches. However, Hopoate left the field in the 47th minute after being head-slammed by Patrick Herbert, who was put on report.

The Sea Eagles started the game strongly. Koula set the tone early, followed by speedster winger Jason Saab scoring with a 60m sprint down the sideline. Hopoate extended the lead to 18-0 within the same number of minutes. Although the Tigers had a brief moment of promise with a try from Luke Laulilii, Olakau’atu quickly responded by charging into the line and offloading for fullback Clayton Laulolo to score.

After halftime, Olakau’atu surged over for another try, and Faulalo, who was exceptional throughout, sent Saab in for his second. Prop Taniela Paseka added to the lead after Tigers fullback Heath Mason was sin-binned for a professional foul. Saab completed a well-deserved hat-trick, giving coach Foran his sixth win in seven matches.
