Bangladesh’s Resilient Performance on Day One
Bangladesh’s national cricket team made a strong comeback on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Despite a challenging middle-order collapse, they managed to post a total of 278 all out, largely due to a remarkable century from their experienced wicketkeeper-batter, Litton Das.
Early Struggles and Recovery
Pakistan’s captain, Shan Masood, won the toss and opted to bat first. However, Bangladesh’s innings started with some difficulties. Seamer Mohammad Abbas struck early, dismissing opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy on the second ball of the innings. Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque then worked together to stabilize the innings, forming a cautious 44-run partnership before Abbas took another wicket, sending Tanzid back for 26. Mominul Haque followed soon after, bowled by Khurram Shahzad for 22.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim attempted to rebuild the innings, leading Bangladesh to a solid 101/3 at lunchtime.
A Sharp Decline in Middle Order
After the break, the situation turned dire for Bangladesh as Shanto (29), Rahim (23), and all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4) all fell within just 36 balls, leaving the team at 116/6. This left the team in a precarious position, but it was at this moment that Litton Das stepped up to deliver an outstanding performance.
Litton Das’ Stellar Century
Litton Das displayed great determination and confidence, scoring an impressive 126 off 159 balls. He hit 16 fours and two sixes, showcasing his ability to counter the Pakistan bowlers effectively. His efforts were supported by lower-order batters Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam, who formed two crucial partnerships of over 60 runs each, helping Bangladesh reach a competitive total.
Bowling Performances from Pakistan
For Pakistan, Khurram Shahzad was the standout bowler, taking four wickets for 81 runs in 17 overs. Mohammad Abbas claimed three wickets, while Hasan Ali added two more to the tally. Spinner Sajid Khan also contributed with one wicket.
Pakistan’s Response
In response, Pakistan’s openers Abdullah Fazal and Azan Awais navigated six overs without losing a wicket, ending the day at 21/0. This means they are trailing Bangladesh by 257 runs at the end of the first day.
