A New Chapter for 9News
The news industry is always evolving, and the recent developments at 9News are a testament to that. With the departure of a long-standing presenter, the network is now looking for a new face to take on the weekend news role. The top candidate has been identified, and it’s none other than Deborah Knight, co-host of A Current Affair.
Deborah Knight, who is 53 years old, is currently leading the race to replace Georgie Gardner, the former 9News presenter. According to reports from Media Diary, Knight is expected to be officially named as Gardner’s replacement by Monday night. She narrowly beat out veteran presenter Mark Burrows for the position, showcasing her experience and talent in the field.
Mark Burrows has over three decades of experience in the industry and worked alongside Gardner on the Today show from 2011 to 2014. His extensive background makes him a strong contender, but Knight’s recent success has positioned her as the frontrunner.
Earlier this month, there were rumors that Amelia Adams, a 60 Minutes reporter, was the leading candidate for the role. However, it is now understood that she is no longer in the running, making way for Knight’s potential appointment.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Gardner’s final 9News Sydney bulletin last month marked the end of an era. The veteran broadcaster, who is 55 years old, fought back tears as she signed off after more than three decades in the industry. Her emotional farewell was a poignant moment for viewers and colleagues alike.
During the broadcast, a montage of her career played, highlighting her journey through the years. Gardner quipped about her past hairstyles, saying, “Watching that reel is a reminder of what hideous hair I’ve had over the years… also how much fun I’ve had.” This lighthearted comment contrasted with the deep emotions she felt during the farewell.
She reflected on the responsibility of delivering the news, describing it as “an enormous privilege” and thanking viewers for their trust over the years. The veteran broadcaster was almost overcome with emotion as she bid farewell to her audience.

Colleagues Pay Tribute
Weather presenter Sophie Walsh spoke about the influence Gardner had on her own career. “Tonight [is] a sad night for all of us here at Nine, as Georgie, you read your last bulletin. The place isn’t going to be the same without you – I’m going to get a little emotional here,” Sophie said, fighting back tears.
Prior to her final farewell, a montage package played, showing highlights from Gardner’s long and storied career. As Cold Chisel’s Ian Moss played the classic “Georgia On My Mind” over the footage, an emotional Gardner said that she was “blown away” by her colleagues’ words.

A Legacy of Excellence
Gardner announced her departure in March, thanking Nine for her long and varied career and expressing her gratitude to colleagues and viewers. She joined Channel Nine in 2002, eventually being appointed the primary presenter for the 6pm Friday and Saturday bulletins, replacing Mark Ferguson.
In 2006, she replaced Leila McKinnon on National Nine News Morning Edition and would go on to work on Today for eight years. She left her role at Today in 2014 to spend more time with her family before later returning to replace Lisa Wilkinson as co-host alongside Stefanovic.
Gardner later co-hosted the show with Deborah Knight in 2019 before Stefanovic returned in 2020 with co-host Allison Langdon. Her career has been a mix of challenges and triumphs, and her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations in the media industry.
