A New Era of Motion-Controlled Gaming
GameCentral recently had the opportunity to try out the Nex Playground, a motion-controlled gaming console that has unexpectedly become a hit. Originally launched in late 2023, this small cube with a built-in camera and library of motion-controlled video games made waves during Black Friday week in the US by becoming the second best-selling games console. Despite being available only in the US, it managed to outperform both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, making it a surprising success story.
Now, the Nex Playground is set to expand its reach by launching in the UK. GameCentral had the chance to get hands-on with the device to explore how it works, why it’s so popular, and whether it truly deserves its success.
How Does the Nex Playground Work?
The Nex Playground is designed as a spiritual successor to the Wii, but it shares more similarities with the Xbox Kinect. However, unlike the Kinect, which was known for its poor performance and low-quality games, the Nex Playground offers a much better experience. The device uses motion tracking technology that is not only passable but genuinely good. Additionally, menu navigation is handled by a separate remote, eliminating the need to flail arms just to pick a game.
Although the team at GameCentral only tested a few games—Avatar: The Last Airbender Earth Rumble, Homerun Heroes, Tennis Smash: Racketville, and Fruit Ninja—they found that the games worked well. Any issues were due to the players not using strong enough motions. For example, in the Avatar game, players had to perform complex movements such as swinging arms to throw rocks, stomping to summon pillars, and jumping and ducking to avoid projectiles. The game responded well to full-body movements without confusing one motion for another.
Even when playing with a crowd of people behind them, there were no real problems, which is a positive sign for local multiplayer experiences. This suggests that the Nex Playground is capable of handling multiple players without interference, making it a great option for family or group play.
The Future of Motion-Controlled Gaming
The success of the Nex Playground raises interesting questions about the future of motion-controlled gaming. While previous attempts like the Kinect faced criticism, the Nex Playground seems to have learned from those mistakes. By combining advanced motion tracking with a user-friendly interface, it offers a more enjoyable and accessible experience.
